The coro ner's Jury which Investigated the Ter co mine disaster, in which 19 miners were killed, returned a verdict to the effect that the deaths were caused by a dust explosion, for which the Rocky Mountain Iron & Coal Company is "partially responsible." CARDINAL MOCENNI DEAD. Succumbs at th Vatican to a Strok of Paralysis. Rome, Nov. 14. Cardinal Mocennl, administrator of the apostolic palace under Pope Leo XIIL died at the Vati can today of paralysis. Dr. Lapponl, who attended the cardinal, went to the apartment of the pope to prepare him for the sad news, fearing bad effect on the pontiff, who is not quite recov ered from his recent illness. Zapf is spending a few days In Portland and the valley. Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Lash, of Okla homa, are visiting with their daugh ter. Mrs. E. M. Bussing. Mrs. D. Shanahan and Miss Minnie Shanahan have returned from a visit with friends at Portland. Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Prael leave to morrow for an eastern visit. Including a stay at the world's fair. Rev. V. 8. Short and children and Mrs. Frank Spittle returned yesterday from an extended eastern visit. Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell Young will spend the winter In San Francisco. They will leave for the south In a few days. William Clinton arrived in the city yesterday from Valdes, Alaska, and will take charge of the affairs of his father, Nicholas Clinton. W. E. Carpenter, of Marysvllle, Cal., has been appointed local agent of the Wells Fargo Express Company, suc ceeding C. J. Trenchard. Minownr Grant Eight-hour Day and Satisfactory Wag, Denver, Nov. 14, Notices were post ed at the mills of five big mines In the Tellurlde district tonight that In the future the eight-hour day will pre vail. The demand for this concession precipitated a strike and caused the bitter strife between the unionists ami the mlneowners In the Tellurlde and Cripple Creek districts. The minimum wage Is $1.00 a day. At one time the miner union offered to accept $2.75 for an eight-hour day.
