Three big houses greeted the performers lust night and every one was delighted with the show. There are only a few days remain ing for Astorlans to see the marvel ous performance of the Alpine family at the Star. This Is an act which has commanded the attention of the press critics and public throughout Europe and America. The other Star acts are fine, too, you know. Coroner Pohl was at Clifton yester day to Investigate the death of John K. Hill, who was drowned there on Monday, He learned that HID start ed In a skiff for Bugby Monday after noon with the Intention of paying, a bill. ' The following day the skiff was found. The body was recovered and there were ho marks on It that would Indicate foul play. Doutless the man fell overboard and waa drowned, The funeral will be held this afternoon from Pohl's undertaking parlors and the Interment will be In Oreenwod. Mentor' 'oV thenfortunate' wW fell from the railroad trestle Is still a mys tery. It Is stored that Charles Dahl could not have been the victim of this accident, as he was seen by Chief Hallock after the time of the drowning. At Monday night s meeting of the council the matter of establishing light at the foot of Ninth street doubtless be called up. will Manager gellg, of Plshers', wishes tt understood that no more than 10 tick ets will be sold to any one person dur Ing James J. Jeffries' engagement In this city. Mr. Bellg was approached by a gentleman who wanted to buy 200 seats, but the request wo turned down. Doubtless the man who made the Offer contemplated speculation. Sergeant Hulse. of Fort Stevens, came up yesterday to take charge of Private Doyle, who had been picked up by the police. Doyle, It was stated yes terday by Csptaln of Police Gamma!, had been on a protracted spree and In tended deserting. . When the officers si Fort Stevens learned of thla they caused his detention, and last night he was returned to the post. All efforts to locate B. Curran, the missing fireman, have proved una vailing, and the belief is growing that he has met death by drowning. , Cur. ran was erroneously stated In these columns yesterday to have been em ployed on ' the Mammilla. The man was employed on the Heather. The po lice have been unable to find any trace of him, and yesterday the Heather put to sea without him, having secured an other fireman. It Is considered likely that Curran ' was drowned while try ing to board the lighthouse tender at the foot of Ninth street. He prob ably attempted to climb aboard and lost his footing, striking his head anglnst the side of the vessel or the piling. Rendered unconscious In this manner, he made no outcry, but sank In the river. Chief Rlckards, of the Heather, caused the ship's electric light to be kept burning all night and the dock was lighted while the vessel was here. There have been two drownings in that vicinity during the past week and the necessity for a street light there Is ' strikingly apparent ' The D. 1L Welch has filed a protest against any alteration In the plans for Improving Grand avenue. Welch's re monstrance a against allowing the Catholic church bulkhead to remain two feet in the street. At the eastern end of the avenue similar complaint was filed against allowing the bulk head which encloses the Gray prop erty to remain in the street, although upon what ground the complaint was registered has not yet developed. The expense of removing the two bulk heads will entail a considerable ex pense. Welch says in his protest that he will decline to pay his share of the cost of the Improvement if the con tractor Is permitted to deviate from the specifications. The oil-carrying steamer Asuncion arrived in port yesterday from Callfor nla with something like 20,000 barrels of fuel on board. The cargo was In tended for Columbia and Willamette river points, but upon her arrival here the Asuncion was ordered to the sound, as there was no demand for her cargo. 4 . . u appear , inai mree companies are fightings for. husineaa. la, .thla. district the Standard Oil, the Union and the National companies. The Asuncion Is under charter to the Union company. which has been doing some business In this part' of the country. However, the other companies are said to have underbid, the Union, with the result that there was no market for the Asun cion's cargo. The vessel will depart today for the sound. In common with other hatcheries on the Columbia river and its tribu taries this year, the salmon hatchery on the Kahuna has secured very few eggs. Very few fish were found In the river when the time came to seine them out. The exact number of eggs taken is not given out,' but a recent visit to the hatchery showed only 124 baskets, es timated at 6000 to the basket, or 625, 000 eggs. Last year over 6,000,000 fry were turned out in the spring from the same hatchery, and the year before 12,000,000 were said to have been turn ed out The cause seems to be easily found 'in the numerous nets and traps In the river, and the wonder is that any fish at ail manage to get up to the spawning grounds. Many say radi cal measures will have to be adopted to save the salmon from utter exter mination in the near future.
