Rogwra. 4U ComDMrelal fr 1 YdZL Editor Morning Astorlun Dear Str Will you kindly Inform the writer why U la that whenever a new and necea- sary enterprise is launched In the city me substantial - property ownera never take any interest in such enter prise T The writer's experience has been that the merchants, wage earners and some of the property holders, who are mostly property poor, are the ones to whom It la left to develop the city and finance any undertaking which Is for the benefit of the city, and more particularly to the prosperous prop erty holders. This has plainly shown It self at the present time, when everybody is interested In get ting a first-class hotel, of which this city stands badly in need, and which will be a paying investment. Why do they hold back? Is It their maxim to have the merchants, who are working and worrying, do the work, and in this way raise the valuation of properties held by a few substantial men who sit at home to pass the time, clipping off Interest coupons, and reap the harvest of other people's labor and energy and financial . outlay t The writer has once before undertaken to assist an institution In this city which was financially bankrupt. He called on one of the substantial property own ers ana asked ror assistance, but was plainly told that they would- not do anything until times should be better and bring up valuations of property that Is to say, until someone should come along and put up the money to raise the valuations. This same en terprise is now a paying Investment. Or Is It because ome of the sub stantlal property owners are directly or Indirectly connected with the hotel or boarding House business, and ' are afraid that the new enterprise will become a detriment? If so, they are 'dead" . wrong. The new hotel will bring people enough to town to glv them all their share; but It will have a good effect, so that the public will get its money's worth. I would like to ask the question Did the opera tion of the railroad, for which the com mittee of twenty-one worked faith fully, put the steamboats out of business? On the contrary, business has Increased and none of the trans portation companies has wy kick coming. If every hostelry in this town Is kept to Its standard, and the public Is treat ed right, they will all make a living, and competition will bring this forth. I would further like to ask the editor the question Did the Vanderbllts, Goulds, Huntlngtons and other men holding large estates lay idle and wait for someone to come to boom their holdings? Not by a long sight! They have worked and Improved every inch of their holdings, so that these natur ally increased In valuation and doubled and trebled the Income of fie own ers. Wake up, property holder, and do something for yourself and your es tate will double It's valuation, and your Income will likewise increase. Think of the future and don't let the town go to decay, and drive the people away, Invite them by your public spirit and enterprise, and you will obtain the end you all have been waiting for. Get a town worth mention, and other peo pie will direct their eyes toward this point Tou can not expect to secure this by holding back and waiting until it Is too late. SUBSCRIBER.
