Chicago, Oct. 12. After prolonged
dlcussions luting nearly a week the
report of the committee on marriage
and divorce waa pre.ented at the lmt
moment at the closing session of the
sixty-fourth Rock River conference
the Methodist Episcopal church at the
Evanston avenue church last night.
The report recommended a long
courtship long enough to test the
quality of love. The Importance of the
permanence of the marriage tie was
emphasised as having a direct bearing
on human development The comlttee
was unanimous in maintaining that
marriage was contracted "until deuth
doth part"
The bond was declared to be In
dossoluble and never to be entered Into
Irreverently or unadvisedly. ,
The principal contention that dlvtUel
the committee was upon the question
of reconlzlng as a candidate for second
marriage the Innocent party to a di
vorce decree. The decision was a
compromise. A resolution was
adopted for the purpose of prohibiting
the remarriage of the guilty matrimo
nial party to a divorce decree during
the lifetime of the Innocent party.
Stamping divorce as a species of sel
fishness the report condemned the
"free lover" who "ninety nine times
out of a hundred seeks divorce that
he may have more marriage."
The proper conception of matrimony
was declared to be the basis of pure
and anticipatory life, as well as the
best detriment from evil.
The conference voted to Join with
other churches In an attempt to Be
cure the enactment of uniform divorce
laws In every state.
