No one can say how many words . there are in the English language, be cause there are many words of doubt ful standing. The ''Century Dictionary" contains about 225,000 words, and the new edition of the "Standard Diction ary" lays claim to over 300,000. Of these many are obsolete, and many Others are rarely used. Science has aded a vast vocabulary of polysyllables that are scientific formulae rather than real words. They have no place ill general literature. The ordinary English vocabulary may be said to contain from 30,000 to 50,000 words, the latter estimate being large. No single writer of literature has used so many W tne lower number named. ' Shakespeare, whose vocabulary is larger than that of any other English poet, unless it be Browning, used about 15,000 words, while Milton, whose range was narrower, employed only about half that number. The vo cabulary of the illiterate has been set as low as 300 words, but this must be exceptional. It is more likely that the ordinary uneducated person uses from 2000 to 3000 words, while, of course he Is familiar with several thousand more, whkh he rei-OKuiKes in print, but does not himself use. The common estimate of the average vocabulary of educated people is from 5000 to 6000 words, but In this case the number of words which are not used is enormous ly Increased. A well-read college graduate should be familiar with per haps 100.000 words, while tn the course of a year he might not use 5000 of them In his writing or conversation. Short hand reporter, find about 2500 word signs and contractions ample for rep resenting the words which are com monly used In public speaking. Classmate. Every school child should know that baldness it a contagious disease, caused by a microbe. Prof. Unna, of Hamburg. Germany. discovered that dandruff, itching scalp, falling hair, and final baldness are produced by a germ or microbe that passes from one bead to another, where It burrows into the scalp and by multiplying and extending deeper and deeper Into the hair follicles, saps the life of the hair root and produces baldness. , , IT TAKES YEAR8 to produce complete baldness, for the action of the dandruff microbe is not constant in every case. It is governed by predisposition, by the state of health, by environment, but particularly by the endeavor made to combat the growth and development of the dandruff microbes, which can only be destroyed with Newbro's Herpicide. This new antiseptic scalp germicide is past the experimental stage. It was made to destroy the germ that causes dandruff and falling hair, and by coaxing energy back into the Impoverished bulbs, It enables the hair to grow naturally and luxuriantly. Thousands of letters from physicians, clergymen and laymen tell the same story of Its wonderful success. AN IDEAL HAIR DRESSING.
