Peculiar Cognomen Not -
Known. ...
Now that The Sage of Eaopua" has
come so prominently before the pub
lic eye, there is a natural curiosity in ,
regard to the origin and xneaning of
the local name for the place , in
which Judge Parker Uvea The name
was first applied to the Esopus Creek,
which rises 'In the foothills of the
Catskllls and flows into the Hudson at
Saugerties, north of Kingston.' The
name 'Esopus also appears to have
been applied by the Indians to the
place where is now the city of Kings
ton, which the original Dutch settlers ,
called Wlltwyick. The Esopus War is
historical event which began in
1658 and lasted until 1664. It broke
out between the Dutch settlers and the 1
Esopus Indians, and the outcome was
the destruction of Wtltwyck by sav
age bands ' of Indians, who killed
twenty-one men and carried otf forty
women and children. Governor Stuy
vesant sent a force from New Amster- '
dam and thoroughly punished the
Indians, recapturing- the prisoners.
When the English secured the New
Netherlands they changed the name of
the village to Kingston, and it became
the flrstcapltal of , this state. Esopus
was later applied to a town in Ulster
County in which the village and West
Sftore Railroad station of Esopus are
now situated; but the creek bearing
the name does not flow through this
town, ' which has the Hudson on one
side and theWalkill on the other.
The United States Gelogical Survey
bulletin In geographical names ays of
the word Esopus: ."Stream In New
Tork. A difference or opinion exists
as to whether- the Indians took the
name from theriver or the river waa
named for the tribe." - ,

From childhood I (had been bothered .
with bad blood, akin eruption, and boila !
I had boil, ranging from five to twenty in
number each season. The burning ac
companying . the eruption was terrible.
S. S. S. seemed to be just the medicine
needed in my case. It drove out all impu
ritiea and bad blood, giving me perma- '
Bent relief from the akin eruption and ,
boila. This has been ten year, ago, and I
aave never had a return of the disease. '
