LOCAL TEAM SHOULD WIN Has Good Chance to Defeat Mult nomah Eleven in Game to Be Played Saturday. HAS WEIGHT AND SPEED, TOO If Officials Do What Is Right Coiumercinl Club Football Players Will Probably Be Successful. As to whether or. not it Is advisable to secure a bunch of heavy football players there has been much specula tion. Experts agree that speed and weight combined go to strengthen the team, but where only one of the two qualities Is available the dope is roll ed two ways. iWhen the Commercial Club team goes against the Multnomah aggrega tion at Portland on Saturday It will be pitted against an aggregation that will outweigh it 12 pounds to the man which, from the standpoint of weight, would be equivalent to depriving the Commercials of Roxy Graham, who tips the scales at 130. Frank E. Wutklns. manager of the Multnomah eleven. has sent down a list of 19 men from whom the eleven will be selected. Here Is the' list: Centers Grieves, :i2; Rintoul, 235; Kellar, 1S5; guards Ross, S17; Seeley, 190; Gault, 195; Wilhelm. 186; tackles Pratt, 184; Klrkley, 175; ends Bowl ing (captain), 147; Jordon, 140; quar tersKerrigan, 142; Holman. 150; halves Dolph, 175; Carroll, 170; Coates, 165; Northrup, 180; Henly 150; fullback Horan, 205. Now, a pencil, some paper and 0 few moments' figuring shows that the combined weight of this aggregation of humanity Is J403 pounds an av erage per man of about 177. Perhaps Multnomah can get the necessary speed out of this bunch, but lots of people can't see It In that light.' Here Is the weight of the Commer cial team: Center Bay, 165; right guard Gammal, 205; right tackle Sutton. 165; right end Regan, 130; left guard a gentleman whose name will be made known later, 192; left tackle Blair, 173; left end Painter, 10; quarterback Stockton, 145; left hulf- back Tallant, 165; right halfback- Graham, 130; fullback Flannlgnn, 181. This is a total weight of 1811 pounds, or an average of 165. Now, the fellow who weighs 165 pounds Is a pretty husky lad such a fellow as Nat Tal lant or Jack Bay or Ted Sutton. Those men are not only big enough to handle the biggest, but they are there with the speed. Five of the eleven men of the Commercial team are Just about the average weight, whereas only two of the 19 mentioned in Mr. Watklns' letter are anywhere near the average of the Multnomah aggrega tion. What Is more. Commercial's big men are fast. The new left guard weighs 192 pounds, and it's all bone. He runs somewhat like a deer. Flannlgan, the powerful fullback, is also very fast, and even Gammal Is quick in getting away. There Is no man his weight In the Multnomah team, with the excep tion of Horan, who is liable to show him any speed. It may be said Regan and Graham are light, but their work demonstrates that they are strong enough for the purposes required. Fast men have won all 'the football games which have ben won. Mr. Horan, sporting editor of the Journal, seems inclined to the belief that weight is essential, but an average of 165 pounds ought to win Saturday's game, Sunday Commercial scored a touch down on a trick play that never could have been executed with an av erage of 177. Nor Is there any con vincing reason to believe that a 177 average could stop this play. They are apt to do some fumbling at Portlund, and this might prove very expensive However, Multnomah's men have not been engaged In artlve warfare as yet so the Commercials will have pretty nearly an even break provided, of course, they get a square deal. If there are only -11 men In the Mult no man line the local leant ought to score 13 points to Multnomah's nothing. A big delegation of Astorluns will go to Portland Saturday morning to see the game.
