Not Been Settlad by Ranohertw 'If more Astoria business men would come out to our country occasionally," said a well known Nehalem valley rancher yesterday, "you would know more about the principal (arming dis trict which is tributary to Astoria, and you would be more enthusiastic in helping to bring about the development of the county. For the want of good roads we every year feed large quanti ties of vegetables and fruits of all kinds to the hogs because we cannot get them to market. The farmers do not even cut all o( their fine timothy bay, worth here (rom 115 to $20 a ton, (or the same reason. Land which will pro duce almost any crop In abundance Is cheap and only awaits connection 'with a market to make Is very valuable. Unless we farmers can bring a little produce to town to sell we can not af ford the expense of the trip very often. "The county saw mill was taken to Road Supervisor J. Jamleson's place last week and will cut planking during the winter for the IS miles of road be tween Olney and Jewell, and we hope In another year to have a road over which a team can haul a few sacks of spuds or a few bales of bay. v "We expect to petition the county court this (all (or another two-mill levy (or the benefit of this road fund. GLAZED BUTTER. Attractive Method of Protecting From Deterioration. United State. Consul General Rich ard Guenther, Frankfort Germany, writes: , Under the caption "Glased Butter," German paper, state that it has long been known In Germany that butter can be glazed by the use of sugar; that is,. It can be coated with a glass-like sugar covering. This method, the pa pens state, seems to become of some 1m portance, as it recently has been used on a large scale In England (or butter sold In forms. The Druggists' Journal calls atten tion to the usefulness of this inno vation and say. that butter so treated keeps fresh (or a longer time than if not treated. It Is first carefully knead ed and washed, then put into forms weighing one pound each and placed In a cool room. The glazing Is done by painting the surface with a hot sugar solution. The brush used should be very soft and the painting should be done quickly. The sugar solution melts the surface of the butter, and the sugar and melted butter (orm a sort of var nlah which protects the butter against deterioration (rom outside influences. CHICAGO'S DRAINAGE SCHEME. Now Completing the Largest Pumping Works in the World. The biggest pumping works in the world are nearlng completion on the lake shore at Chicago. They are in tended to convey ' the drainage o( a great section o( the city into the south branch of the Chicago river. When the drainage scheme on the north side of the city is in operation, no single drop of the city sewage will be able to find its way into Lake Michigan (rom Ev anston to the Calumet river. It will all flow Into the backward-running Chi cago river, and thence Into the drain age canal. The flow o( lake water into the river will dilute this drainage so that, at last Chicago will have a com plete and entirely sanitary system, guaranteed to affect either the health ot the city itself nor that of any city on the route (ollowed by the waters of the Chicago river a. it Journeys to the Gulf of Mexico. THE RUSSIANS' BURDEN. Enormous Expense to the Peopls of the Czar's Household. It Is expensive to have a royal house hold. In this country we pay our Pres ident a paltry 350,000 a year very much less than many a president of a bank, railroad, or trust receives. To the minds of some o( our citizens this seems to be an exorbitant sum to pay to our Chlet Executive. But It is not We treat our President and other of ficials upon whom the conduct of the nation depends in a nlgardly way as far as finances go. Now look at Rus sia, where not only the Czar am) hi. Immediate household are supported from the public treasury, but his col lateral, are also a burden upon the long-suffering people. It Is reported that the list of tha Czar's relatives In cludes a brother, an uncle, four cous ins of the first degree, ten of the see- ond, thirteen of the third, and a great- uncle. All o( these, except the thir teen cousin, of the third degree, must be addressed a. "Imperial highness." These 23 male relative, of the Czar are a great financial burden to the em pire, as each of them receives an an- come o( $480,000. They, moreover, own In the aggregate S000 square mile, of land and 32$ palace., employing an army of 20,000 servants. We are mil a long way. (rom this sort of thing in this country, even though "the repub lic became imperial," and in spite of the (rothings of political demagogues and others who go about breathing out threatenlngs and slaughter against the nation's life. A severe earth quake has wrecked the governor", building and (our school houses at Tal cahuano, according to a Herald dis patch from Valparaiso, Chile. The Quirlqulna lighthouse was ruined. Deaths have been reported. t E li SBBH IF1 tl I i H f . a n fill Columbus, Ohio, May 19, 1903. Some four years ago I was suffering from impure blood and a general run down condition of the system. I had na appetite, was losing flesh, and had an all- fone tired feeling that made me misers le. I began the use of S . S. S., and after taking seven or eight bottlrs my skin was cleared of all eruptions and took on a ruddy, healthy glow that assured me that my blood had been restored to its nor mal, healthy condition. My appetite wa restored, as I could eat anything put be fore me, and as I regained my appetite I increased in weight, and that ' 'tirea feel ing" which worried me so much disap peared, and I was once again my old self. I heartily recommend S. S. S. as the best blood purifier and tonic made, and strongly advise its use to all those in need of such medicine. Victor Stubbins. Cor. Barthman and Washington Aves. Wheeling, W. V., May aS, loot. My system was run down and my joints ached and pained me considerably. I had used S. S. S. before and knew what it was, so I purchased a bottle of it and have taken several bottles and the ache, and pains art gone, my blood has been cleas ed and my general health built up. I can testify to it as a blood purifier and tonic. 1533 Market St. JOHNCStKiN. If you have any symptoms of dis ordered blood write us and our physicians will advise you free.
