Irwin of Juneau, who was super tntemient of public Instruction of Ore gon for the four years preceding J. It, Ackerman's term, but has been In Juneau ever since, having been United States commissioner, and now being employed In a law office there, lie is on his way to St. Louis to deliver tiie principal address m Alaskn day. Oc tober IS, which Is the n tin I versa ry of the transfer of the territory from Hus sla to the United States, "One great feature of the Alaska ex titbit at St. Louis Is made by the Trend well mine, which Is Just across the bay from Juneau," said Mr. Irwin. "This Is a mock representation of the nmoun of gold taken out of the mine during the 16 years of Its existence. A pyra mid of slabs covered with gold foil has been built, each slab representing one year's output, and nil bein, Inches thick. The top slab, about the size of a common brick, represents the first year's production, when the mine had only five stamps, but the lust of tae 16 is SS inches wide and 7S Inches long. This whole pyramid represents $21,700,000, and beside it is a cube representing $7,200,000, the amount of gold paid by the United States for Alaska, for the purpose of compari son with the output of that one mine. The Treadwell Is now In the prime of its existence, employing 1500 men and S00 stamps. The vein above ground Is still being worked like a quarry and prospecting has been carried to a flepth of J200 feet, showing that the ore In creases in value with depth. There are more than half a dozen mines within 30 miles of Juneau which bid fair to excel the Treadwell In value. "The total output of gold from Alas kn, exclusive of the Klondike an ' Brit ish Columbia, from July 1, 1903, to July 1. 1904, which passed through the custom house, was over $6,000,000. This does not include the large sums carried out by individuals In pokes and no doubt the total output exceeded the purchase price (if the territory. "The fisheries are also enormous. The ennners pay to the United States government a license of 4 cents on ev ery case of fish canned and 10 cents on every barrel of salted fish. This has yielded a revenue of over $100,000 a year. There are four dozen one-pound cans In a case, so that the tax amounts to 1 cent on a dozen cans. In other words, the territory produced 120,000, 000 pounds of fish. t "The has been a REPORT OP TUB CONDITION OF First National Bank of Astoria, at Astoria, In tht state of Oregon, at the close ot business, Sep tenibor th, 11)04. aaaaaaaaaatat Miscellaneous Advertisements aa:a:mnaaammaaaaau:m::c;i FOR SALE At Gaston's feed stable, ont Landis harnssa maohlne, ont 20-horss motor, on atarttr box, 351 RESOURCES Ttat e-inen isatner noting, so test ,onns and discounts $390,167 05 4 play 8-inch rubbar baiting, 1 pair overdraft, secured and un butchar'a wall sealta, 1000 grain secured aacKs; ona sman-rrtmur typewriter, if, s, i,mu1, ,,. cr dilution 1,177 7J LOST Note-book containing check for Honda, securities, etc. $32.50, ring and receipts, Finder 13. It is a good live stock and agricultural country und will be a country of homes, for man people can live there, as well as 1 Norway and Finland. "Juneau In a thriving town of 2000 people and more buildings of a perma nent character have been put up this year than for some time, Including an Oddfellows' hull. The United State government has a system of licensing all business, and with a population a little over 2000, we have saloons, each of which pays $1500 a year license Half of this Is aplled to the support of the municipal government and the other half to the support of the schools, We have enough revenue to support one of the most Interesting schools In the country. There are six teachers and I believe we stand In the front rank of the United States in the rate of salaries paid them. The lowest Is $1000 a year for nine months' work, and the principal gets $1500. We have a good school building with all modern facilities. "I think the license system works well there, and It Is the only way we could do anything with the saloons. The town Is peaceable and though we have rough miners, there are few toughs md they keep very close. A respecta ble lady can walk down the streets In safety at any time of night and no body thinks of locking his door." BEATS THE WORLD FOR HOP8. Weinhard's Loif r Beer.
