The nine months' struggle of the machinists and boiler makers of the Chicago, Lake Shore and Eastern railroad against a 10 per cent wage reduction Is at an end. The com pany announced that If the unions would call off their strikes tt would reinstate as many of the former em ployes as possible at the lower wages. The reault was a stampede of more than half of the 400 . strikers, which caused fighting and brought out the police. The company hired 100 of the old men and will take on more until full union crews have been engaged. The trike-breakera wlU be discharged., . The railroad, which Is owned by. the Illinois Steel Company," announced the first of the year that It would inaugur ate a 10 per cent cut in Wfs, The machinists and boHermikcr, walked out and the company started to employ non-union workers.' Fifty arrests have keen iriade by the police for assaults, 40 men have been ''slugged," locomo- tlves have been damaged so that they could not be run and tracks have been torn up. ., 1 . CUBA MUST IMPORT LABORERS. Appropriation Advanced to Bring Men From Canary Island. Havana, Sept 23. So critical is the present situation among the sugar-cane growers of Cuba that a bill has been drafted in the senate to empower Pres ident Palma to disburse 3600,000 In the encouragement of labor importa tion from the Canary islands. Th'i Inhabitants of this group have been specified In the proposed legisla tion as the most adaptable to the physical and climatic, conditions , of Cuba, of any foreign plantation help, in that they are " universally recog nised as a law-abiding people, quite without anarchistic or' other disorderly tendencies, and faithful 'to- the spirit and letter of the contracts which they enter into. They are also exceedingly frugal In their mode of living and possessing like racial characteristics, they readily. conform to the customs and habits of the Cuban people. There are, in Cuba hundreds of acres of growing cane which can not be cut this year unless the labor problem is solved by the as-,. sistance of the Canary Islands. NOTED PRESBYTERIAN DEAD. It gained such headway that I was forced to resign my position and seek relief at Hot Springs. After spending all the means 1 had I went to Memphis. In less than three weeks I was in a hospital, and after nine weeks of suffering I was discharged as cured. In less than 4 month every bone in my body seemed to be affected and felt aa if they would break at the least exertion. Again I was compelled to resign, and I returned to the hospital for a seven weeks stay. When I came out I waa advised to try farming. When I first went on the farm I prevailed on the only firm who handled drags to get me one dozen bottles of S. S. S. At that time both of my hands were broken out with blisters and I was covered with boils and sores. In the meantime my druggist had gotten two doten bottles of S. S. S. for me and I began its nse, and after taking the thirteenth bottle not a sore or boil was visible. R. B. PowsiA.
