of the work undertaken by the county
Is now finished. The county court rs
Jected all bids for the foundation and
undertook the construction. The low
est bid was about 121,000, which was
considered excessive. As yet ail of the
bills have not been presented to the
court, and not for some weeks to come
will It be possible to give exact figures
as to the cost of the foundation. How
ever, the total cost Is estimated at
from $13,000 to $14,000. For a time
much difficulty was experienced by the
county officials, because of the dis
position on the part of the workmen to
neglect their duties. Finally an effi
cient foreman was engaged and the
work progressed satisfactorily. The
foundation is pronounced by experts
to be an excellent one, and there Is
not the slightest doubt that It will
hold the big building. Messrs. Hastle
ft Dougan are now placing the stone
for the basement and the walls are be
ginning to assume proportions. The
stone is finely cut and each block plac
ed yesterday fit perfectly. The con
tractors are determined to make a rec
ord on Clatsop's new budding and
there is every assurance that the s tinc
ture will be a fine one throughout
While the court house Is to be of two
stories, the basement will be built
above the street grades, so the build
Ing will really have a three-story ap
pearance.
