M., says: Banker EUnnd has returned .to his home at Portales, X. M., and verified the story that he had been held by brigands in the state of Sonora, Mex ico. He has lost 50 pounds In flesh. He Is known as a conservative business man and the story that he had fallen Into the hands of brigands who de manded ransom from his wife at Por tales, N. M., was not doubted. He was forced by the bandits to write to his wife and to sign the name of George Reese. He said: "I waa captured August 5 by four men and they robbed me of every thing I had. I think It was in the state Sonora, Mexico. They Immediately carried me to the mountains and I was made to walk every day and was fed very lUtle. At night I was tied with ropes. On pain of Instant daath the bandits made me write the letter to my wife demanding the ransom, com pelled me to sign the name of George! Reese and made me misspell the name, The letter was mailed from the. town of Oputai , The changed positions every day and marched me through the mountains until the night of Au gust 30, when I made my escape. secured a sharp rock and cut the ropes that bound rrie and left while they slept. About 9:30 last night a surf man at Pamet River Life Saving station saw the lights of a steamer heading north up the coast. Shortly after the vessel sent up distress signals and for more than half an hour the signals were con stantly being made. Suddenly they ceased, the lights dsuppeared and t beleved the vessel went down. An hour later boats were seen by the surfman trying to make a landing at Pamet river through the high surf. The patrol warned them not to at tempt and they pulled outside the breakers, awaiting daylight. The crew of Cahoons Hollow station reported that a steamer believed to be long to the lighthouse service pasfed that atatlon early last night and may be the one sunk. AS SCHLEY SAW IT. Announcement that Rear Admiral Schley will shortly publish his autobiography entitled "Forty Years Under the Flag," Is made.
