Of the 20,000 striking meat butcher at the Union stockyards at Chicago, more than 15.000 are of foreign birth. Twelve thouaand of theae are unxkllled laborers. Their wages, at the mini mum of 17 cents per hour, average $7.40 a week, and In two years save sufficient money for paasage home. Three thounand leave for home every year and their places are filled by other Immigrants. Few can speak English. There are only 2000 voter In the col ony, and a great many of them do not Intena to become Americanized. The foreign colony includes Bohemians, Poles, Lithuanians and Slovak. Their settlement is virtually a city of all na tionalities. The 20,000 men under con sideration , do not include the 12,000 sympathetic strikers of the allied trades. While most of the skilled la borers are native-born, a number of early immigrants have attained to higher positions. The great bulk of the laborers take orders from their bouse with the obedience of soldier It i not their part to reason why. Their English vocabulary may be lim ited, but they understand an oath, and the stockyards has a language of its own, ; Immigration Into the packing town began in 1885, when the packing in dustry was in its infancy. With sub sequent Immigrations the Union stock yards and Transit Company has grow until it is now the largest industrial organization of Its kind In America. The unskilled foreigners were wel corned by the packers. They were more docile than the native-born and were lea capable of organization. Once an Idea waa in their heads they worked mechanically, uncomplainingly. And they were willing to work for 15 cents an hour. . Mgr. Guldl, apostolic delegate to the rniiapplnes, whose death at Manila at the age of 62 ha been noted, was supposed to be one of the cardinals reserved "In petto" by PIu X. Te had been in the diplomatic service of the church from hi youth, for he was a special favorite with the late pope, and of late years his confidential ad vlser, his office at Rome being "sec retary of the congregation of extra ordinary ecclesiastical affairs." It was accordingly to treat problems such as that of the friars' lands and the sep a ration of the church and state rela tlons that Guldi had been trained, and he is regarded as having accomplished his work successfully, so far a the church is concerned.
