JOSEPH SCHELL "THE AUTHOR.
Wrote Anonymous Letter Making At.
tack on Arohbiehop Christie.
Portland Journal: Archbimhop Alex
ander Christie has decided to Ignore
the attack made upon him through an
anonymous letter and refuses to dis
cuss the affair at all. It Is said, how
ever, that he has discovered the author
of the circular that was spread broad
cat through Oregon and a copy of
which was sent to Rome. It is said
that Joseph Schel! is the writer of the
articles.
In the letter the writer brought the
name of the Right Rev. C. J. O'Reilly,
bishop of Baker City, Into his charges
Bishop O'Reilly, however, Is not pursu
ing the course of silence adopted by the
archbishop, but vigorously denounces
the author.
"I am Incapable of expressing my In
dlgnatlon agaJnat the fiendish spirit
t prompted the author to make
such charges," he said. "It is a slan
derous and deplorable attempt to In
Jure the cause of Catholicism. There
is no part of the United States where
priests as a body are more capable,
pious and devoted to the cause than
here in Oregon.
"My relations ' with Archbishop
Christie are and have always been of
the most agreeable nature. He ia uni
versally regarded as a man of sterling
character and ability, and In the com
paratively short time of his admints
tratlon has accomplished a great deal
In behalf of religion and education. No
attention should be paid by honest men
to the cowardly charges made by those
who assume anonymous names tor the
purpose of hiding their identity."
Bishop O'Reilly will leave for Baker
City tomorrow. Others of the Catholic
clergy are equally vehement In their
denunciation of the author of the
anonmous letter, and laymen in this
city have expressed their Indignation.

TO BACHELORS.
There are some hundreds of thou
sands more men than women in the
Central and Western states of America
and in Canada.
As a result thousands of trustworthy
men farmers, miners and others liv
ing in certain districts there can not
possibly get wives in thir own neigh
borhoods.
But In England, Scotland. Ireland
and Wales there are a million more
women than men, and in these coun
tries thousands of good, intelligent and
attractive girls many of them daugh
ters of farmers and all of them quail-
fled to make excellent wives see noth
ing before them while they stay here
but the prospect of living and dying
as old maids, and this, to them, Is a
decidedly unpleasant prospect They
would willingly emigrate to America,
could they be assured that they were
going to meet worthy men there as
husbands, and that they could look
forward to happy, if humble, homes
on the other side of the Atlantic.
We may say that all of them could
afford to emigrate at their own ex
pense.
We are prepared to give good men
introductions to these girls.
If you wish to get an introduction.
please write us with such particulars
of yourself (age, nationality, occupa
tion and circumstances) as a sensible
girl would expect to get and we shall
write to you In reply, with a view to
bringing about a suitable introduc
tion without undue delay.
Tell us what kind of a wife (age, na
tionality, appearance and disposition)
you wish to get
If you have preference for any par
ticular Christian sect please name It
Tou will also enclose our fee of $5.
A further, fee of MS will be due to us
within one month after marriage, thus
making 350 altogether. We do not
confine ourselves to one introduction.
We give as many as will be necessary
until marriage. But we make no
charge for any Introduction after the
payment of our said fee of $5 for the
first
It Is not at all necessary that you
should be a wealthy man.
But It Is necessary that you be a
man who would maxe a juna ana
good husband to a good wife.
If you are not such a man, please
do not write us.
