TKASDAJJ5, General Faawneer Agent, bt. Paul, Minn, - CHLOROFORMING PLANTS. Method Employed to Make Them Blot- j ,(.; f som Early. The florist who Is first In the mar ket with Reasonable blonsoms can command extraordinary prices for his product Consequently, experiments are constantly being made in green houses In the direction of "forcing" early blooms. Quite recently scientific horticulturists have learned that plants are extremely sensitive to the effects of anaesthetics, and that the fumes of ether, for example, will cause their blossoms to develop several days earlier than in the course of nature. The discoverer of this Interesting fact is Johannsen of Copenhagen. The action of the vapor of chloroform and that of ether In arresting the move ments of the leaflets of the sensitive plant (mimosa) hav4 im?g been known, but the action has been considered to be purely locaL Johannsen'a experiments have been repeated on a large scale In Germany and In France, the general method of procedure being the following: In a case, as nearly air tight as possible, the lilac bushes are placed at a tem perature of about 45 degrees Fahren heit Light Is excluded. From the top of the case Is suspended a small cup Into which the ether Is poured by means of a funnel through an aper ture made for the purpose, and Imme dlately closed. Owing to the explo sive nature of the vapor the greatest care must be taken to avoid the pres., Slice of any flame, TWrty pr '0 grams of ether are enough for 100 cubic liters of tlr. Tha plahte are Subjected to the Influence of the vapor for 48 hours. On their removal from the ether cham ber the leaves fall, if they have not already done so. The plants are then removed to a cool house and gradually subjected to forcing In the ordinary ss&nner. , . By these means the expansion of the blooms la hastened, the etherized plants producing their blooms seevral days before those treated in the ordinary manner. The gain of a few days is a matter of great Importance to the grower for market in the winter sea son, as be gets so much better a price for hla goods. Moreover, the cost of fuel la reduced, for the same amount of heat Is not required for forcing, as we have seen that the time required Is diminished. Not only lilacs, but many other (Towering shrubs have been experimented upon, and With such good results that the process has been adopted on a large scale. . Women from nearly all countries are constantly arriving at Manila in search of work, but it Is said that few of them are from the United States. American girls are in demand there, and espe cially stenographers and typewriters, who receive larger salaries than they do in America. It is noticed that meet of the "want ads," say American girl preferred. What Shail-We Have for Dessert? This question arises In tho family every day. Let us answer it to-day.
