New fork, July 4. Defying the
Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company to
collect a second fare between Brook
lyn and Coney Island, newly lOOfl pas
sengers were ejected during Sunday
when the cars reached Neck road,
where the second nickel is taken. A
recent decision bearing on the Ques
tion was to the effect that passengers
were entitled to ride all the way for S
cents, and In arguing over the matter,
the company claiming the decision not
to be legal, ejectons have been grow-
Ing rapidly.
Many free fights occurred and a
large force of Inspectors awaited each
car at Neck road. In one or two In
stances they were beaten off, when
passengers dismounted from several
cars and took the part of their fellow-
travelers. Many of the people who
objected were satisfied, however, with
merely having an , employe lay his
hands on them. They stepped quietly
from the cars and secured cards from
lawyers and witnesses, who were on
hand in force, preparatory to Insti
tuting suits against the company.
Many hundreds of coses already have
been filed, but it was not until the
matter became well understood through
the newspapers that the movement to
su the company took on such large
proportions.

Pennsylvania Town's Fireworks Goes
Off Ah.sd of Time.
Altoona, Pa,, July 4. There was no
fireworks display today In Coupon, a
town on the summit of the Alleghanies.
The celebration had already come off.
and, as it was premature, there was
plenty of excitement while the fire
works lasted.
John Wicks, the village merchant,
was the indirect cause. Wicks drove
to town to purchase his supply of fire
works. He remained in the city until
Sunday afternoon, starting home late
with a wagonload of firecrackers, sky
rockets and squabs. Just as he reach
ed the outskirts of the town his cigar
dropped into the straw at the bottom
of his wagon and five minutes later,
when near the union meeting-house, he
saw the first sign of trouble. A pin
wheel which was Ignited by the smol
dering straw was seized with a tan
trum, leaped from its box and spread
sparks through the entire cargo. A
roman candle pointed Wicks' way and
drove him to the woods. A hundred
sky rockets which inclined In the di
rection of the meeting-house let go
about the same time. They went in
through the open windows simultan
eously and caused a panic among the
congregation.
By the time the congregation reached
the open street Wicks' wagon and Its
frightened horse were disappearing up
the main street in a blaze of glory.
Fortunately, no one was Injured in the
stampede to escape from the church.

able has Just created a world's record
In prize firing off Malta, according to
a Herald dispatch from London. One
of the Venerable's 12-Inch barbette
guns fired nine rounds In three min
utes and scored nine bits.
The following was the actual record
of the foremost barbette, the time oc
cupied In each case being three min
utes: Turret, 9 rounds, 5 hits; right
gun, 9 rounds, 9 hits; left gun. S
rounds, 6 hits. Total, 23 rounds, 19
hits.

New York, July 4. Arriving here
after nearly a year's absence, on his
way to rejoin his family in San Jose,
Cal. Sylvester Donohue, 60 years old,
fell dead on the Cunard line pier with
in an hour after leaving the steamer.
Mr, Donohue, who is a merchant In
San Jose, left New York on the Umbrla
In September of last year. He boarded
the Umbrla at Queenstown on Sunday
of last week. According to the ship's
officials ,b was not 111 during the
voyage, nor did he give any sign of
Illness when he stepped ashore.

New York July 4. If prolonged and
general tests prove to be as satisfac
tory as the preliminary ones, medical
men believe that a formula Just dis
covered by a well-known physician of
this city will revolutionise the science
of anesthetics, freeing It from the dan
gers of ether and chloroform as at pres
ent administered.
The process consists In the main of
an Invention by which 1 per cent of
chloroform and 98 per cent of oxygen
are combined with mathematical ex
actness. Instead of being dependent
on the careful administration of the
anesthetic drop by drop, the apparatus
acts automatically, keeping the chlo
roform mixing with the oxygen In a
2 per cent solution all the time, ob
viating any chance of the patient get
ting too much, and doing away with
the risk of giving too much.
