The big freighter Xebraskan, belong
ing to the Amerlcan-ltawallan Steam
ship Company, arrived in port last
veiling from San Francisco. She did
.tot get in until about S o'clock, and
was not up to the city until 4. The
arrival of the Nebraskan signalises the
end of the longest journey ever made
by an oll-burnlng vessel.
The big freighter departed from New
York for the Columbia river, and had
rather a trying experience on the other
coast Off the River Platte she en-
countered stormy weather and for some
time was In a hurricane. She came
through safely, however, but In the
weather, being compelled to stop for
a short time.
The Nebraskan covered more than
13,000 miles on her voyage from New
York to San Francisco, and an addi
tional TOO miles to Astoria. She brings
about 2000 tons of general cargo for
Charles S. Beebe & Co., having dis
charged the bulk of her freight at the
Bay city. The vessel is to load at
Portland and San Francisco for Hono
lulu, and will there take on a sugar
cargo. Whether or not she will re
main on this const has not yet developed.

War Vessels Go North.
The arrival of three war vessels off
the mouth of the river Saturday night
caused more or less excitement, as It
was generally believed the trio would
enter the Columbia river on Sunday,
The vessels were the monitor Wyoming
and the torpedo-boat destroyers Paul
Jones and Preble. At daylight Sunday
morning they weighed anchor and con
tlnued north. They were bound for
the Bremerton navy yard, but will,
toward the end of the month, run
around to the Columbia to be present

Sailors Are Scares.
Good sailors are in great demand at
Columbia river porta and owners and
agents of coastwise vessels And diffi
culty in securing men. The Increase
railroad tariffs on lumber has been
boon to the owners of schooners and
steamers, which are kept busily en
gaged carrying away the output of the
northern mills. There is consequently
much more work for sailors, and the
union is frequently hard pressed for
men. The union wage for coastwise
sailor la 140 a month.

Charlie Huldermnn plthched a game
of ball at Fort Stevens Sunday thn
was a masterly effort In every sense
of the word. With the very worst va
rlety of support Imaginable for a few
Innings. Halderman threw steadily
and never once allowed the general
tendency to muff disconcert him,
Swcp Morton was behind th bat, and
for about half the game these two
young gentlemen strove to represent
the Commercial Club, with better sue
cess than the partisans of the clubmen
hoped for. Stevens has a batting ag
gregatlon that few pitchers can sue
cessfully throw for, yet Halderman
laid away 14 of them Sunday. In the
first Inning he tried an In and an out
that were not the proper sort of dope,
but later on. when he began to drop
them, the soldiers swung a If with
immafinarr bat. Steven got but
eight hit off Halderman in the 10 In
nlngs.
Th crowd went down on the steam
er Howard and th launch Fox. The
Howard took th biggest portion of
the enthusiast and th trip across the
bay, via Fort Columbia, was most en
joyable. The day wa fin and the at
tendance would have been , much
greater had th carrying capacity of
the Howard been sufficient to accom
modate those who wished to make th
trip.
Th Steven ground I not th beat
in th world. It I covered with long
grass and slopes away In such manner
a to make accurate throwing difficult.
Th sun, biased down Into the eyes of
the fielders, and even such reliable
fielders as Stockton and Harry Ora
ham figured in the error column. The
soldiers wanted to win and the rooters
were out from the barracks In num
bers. For a time It seemed that Com
mercial was defeated, but at the criti
cal stpge the clubmen took a brace
and pulled out successful after ten lrv
nlnrs of exciting, though ragged ball
playing.
Harry Graham scored on a passed
ball in the first inning, Stockton fly
Ins- out to Chilton and Morton and
O'Toole fanning. The soldiers piled
up four runs in their half. Thomason
knocked a long fly to Tommy Ross,
who was in the right garden, and Ross
dropped It. Hulse fanned, but reached
