FOUGHT WITH STUBBORNESS The Timely Arrival of Iteln- forcemeats I All That Saved the Japanese From Defeat. Liao Yang, Thursday, Juno 16. During the night of June 14 tha Rus sian force, under General Stakelberg, which had been engaged with the Jap anese for two daya, slept In their posi tion, four miles south of Vafangow and on the morning of June 15, assumed the offensive and attacked the Japanese lines. The battle lasted all day and the Russian Inflicted heavy loss on the enemy. No doubt was felt by the Rus sian of theJr ability to force the Jap anese back, but heavy reinforcements for the enemy had been brought up rapidly from the south, arriving In time to turn the scale. An entire division of fresh Japanese troops was thrown Into line against the already tired Rus sians and tbe immense superiority In numbers enabled them to overlap the left flank of the Russians, who had not sufficient men to meet the turning movement and were forced to with draw upon Vafangow. The Russians retired reluctantly, not beaten, but outnumbered. Oreg'on vStationery Twenty-four aheeta Paper and two packages Envelopes, bearing pictures' of Oregon scenery on each sheet and enevlope. Here U the prise hard luck' story, as anybody wUl admit who remembers how Infrequently the tipping habit la Indulged In on street care. It was a Broadway conductor who made the confession, having been led to do so by the casual remark of one of the pas- aengera that "we are all creatures of habit." "Tea," he said, 'that's so. I was on the down trip the other morning when a nice man got on board and handed me a 10-cent piece for fare. I started to hand -him back a nickel change. when, with a wave of his hand, he said. Oh, Just keep that for luck. Buy your self a cigar.' Gee! what creatures of habit we are. Before I realized what was doing I had run up two fares Instead of one." And something very like a salt tear trickled down the conductor's nose. Scow Bay Iron 8 Brass Works Manufacturers of Iron, Steel, Brass and Bronze Castings. General Foundrymen arid Patternmakers.
