Its num ber of readers is rapidly increasing, and it is acknowledged to be th best newspaper Astoria has ever had. Do you ADVERTISE in it w Police Are Looking Vp Her Record With 91 Any Startling and Interesting He- ' -: suits. A.-:...rv. i .Chicago, Ju" . When Jfre. Rebec ca Bailey called al the Western hos pital to e hr fiancee. Louis MUler, who had been taken to th Institution probably fatally, wounded by a bullet, she was arrested oi) a charge of shoot trig him. At the time of her arrival the man was making an ante-mortem statement accusing her and the police were searching for her. , ' With Mrs, Bailey was' Miss Sophia Gabner, who waa held as a wttnesa of the shooting. , Mrs. Bailey and Miller were to have been married within a week.'. Miller was believed to be dying early to day. ,: The shooting took placce In Mra. Bailey's apartment and it waa four hours later before the police were In formed. The man waa found by Mra. C. J. Snyder, who declares he said that he had shot himself. Mrs. Bailey had fled from the house. The police found the apartments deserted. Mrs. Balloy and Miss Gabner could not be found. It was learned that the woman had rented the apartments & few days be fore and that she gave-the name of "Mrs. Miller." The theory of the police is that Mra Bailey shot Miller while In a jealous rage because of his failure to name a definite day for the wedding cere mony. Little Is known of Mrs. Bailey's rife prior to the death of her hus band. Dr. S. O. Bailey, who was a member of the staff of the Western hospital. His name waa Barrett. Al though never known In Chicago by the name of Hicks, Mrs. Bailey Is said to have last year become the wife of one Edward Hicks, and that divorce pro ceedings are pending in the superior court. developed marvelous possibilities of agriculture by their knowledge of chemistry and botany, by their ability to study the effects ot climatic con ditions upon crops, who havt brought fruits and vegetables and cereals to greater perfection by their superior knowledge, Success, Will It Pay to Go to College? Young people often ask ua, "Will It pay to go to college If one Is going to be a merchaat, a druggist, a farmer, etc.?" Whether or not a liberal education pays, depends upon the ambition of the Inquirer. Do you want to be Just as much of a man as possible, or do you want merely to get as much money as you can? If your ambition Is simply to see how many goods you can sell and how much money you can rake together; If you have no desire to reach out Into the broad fields, to be known as a man who amounts to something In the world, who carries weight In his com munity; if have no ambition to be a man of broad, liberal, progressive Ideals; If you do not wish to know an thing about your goods before they reach your store, where they are made, or the conditions of the people who manufacture them, and have no de sire to better their conditions; If you have no ambition to make the world a little better than you found it, then a college education will probably not do you much good. If it is simply go ing to Increase your capacity to grasp, seize, and hold material things, to get a little more away from others by your long-headed methods; if it is only go ing to Increase your shrewdness, your ability to scheme ways and means of piling up more dollars, then I do not advise you to go. But if you want to be of real help to your generation; If your ambition is to be just as much of a man as possible, to be larger and truer and nobler; if you wish to make the most of the material of the Crea tor has given you, then get- all the knowledge you can transmute into real power. I notice that it has been the broadly educated men that have enlarged and Improved the spheres Into which they have entered. As a rule, it has been the boys who have been to college and gained a liberal education who have mixed brains with the soil, who have No Dessert More Attractive Why use gelatine and spend hours soaking, sweetening, flavoring and coloring when Jell-0 produeea better results in twe minutes jSveiytWagiatkepaokaf. The Proteetlon of Piers. The waterfronts of New Tork and New Jersey have been frequently af flicted with fir ever since the horrible North German Lloyd disaster of June, 1900. The latest visitation of this sort Is the burning of the Delaware, Lacks- wanna Western plera In Jersey City on Sunday evening. The frequency of these flies, th enormous property loas Involved, th menace to life and limb, the danger to adjoining " property through the Inflammable character of much of the goods stored on th piers and the great difficulty In fighting the flamea present a problem which makes experts pause and consider." The Tribune has been gathering the views of men equipped to apeak author Itatlvety on th subject of safer piers. It ' would appear that fireproof con struction and Increased appliances for fighting flamea which might break out among the freight stored on piers are the means most generally approved of guarding New Tork and Its neighbor ing New Jersey cities against the de vourer which has caused euch havoc along their waterfronta In recent year The North German Lloyd Steamship Company, with commendable prompt ness, rebuilt Its piers In fireproof form, and the announcement from the Lack awanna company, a progressive and well- munaged corporation, that It will do likewise is reassuring. The piers now in process of con struction by the city In the Chelsea district are practically proof against flames, and all the piers that the mu nicipality has erected In th last seven years are declared by the dock com missioner to b equally safe. Opinions differ as to methods and materials, but there can be no doubt that so long as ordinary wooden wharves line our waterfronts the recurrence of the dis asters of recent years la an ever pres ent peril. The cities of Hoboken and Jersey City are not faultless In regard to this. With the enormous property Interests which their plera Involve, they should be equipped with modern ftrcboats. The most effective way to fight pier fires Is from the water. This city might not always find It convenient to lend Its fl re boats, and never with safety could It let all of them go to the Jersey aide of the river. This latest disaster ought to teach these towns a lesson. New Tork Tribune. Low Steersga Rates. It Is feared by prudent and well balanced observers that the cutting of steerage rates across the Atlantic to absurdly low figures will soon bring to these shores hordes of Immigrants who will not add to the prosperity and highest welfare of this republic. There may be too much reason for this apprehension. Of newcomers of sterling stuff we cannot have too many, but of the multitudes that flock from abroad to the worst of the overcrowd ed tenement districts of New York we already have an ample supply. More tillers oi the soil are needed, more workers In the open air. But of the huddled masses Jammed Into cramped and narrow quarters Manhattan has already a sufficient number to care for. Driven to Desperation. ' Living at on out-of-the-way place, remote from civilization, a family la often driven to desperation In case of accident, resulting In Burns, Cuts, ,Wounds, Ulcers, etc. Lay in a supply of Bucklen'a Arnica Salve. Thos anticipating an eastern trip, or a visit to th Louisiana Purchase exposition sit St Louis, cannot afford to overlook th advantages offered by tb Missurl Paclflo Railway, which, on account of Its various routes and gate ways, hoc been appropriately named "Th World' Fair Rout." Passengers from th northwest take the Missouri Pacific trains from Den ver or Pueblo, with th choice of either going direct through Kansas City, or via Wichita, Port Seott and Pleasant HU1.
