BURGLAR FOUND AT WORK.
While the tug Vosburg Is at Port
land being repaired, the freight and
passenger rates from Astoria and
Portland to Tillamook have been re
stored. It has been intimated that
there has been settlement of the pres
ent war between the two rival eom
panics, but this Is pronounced absoi
lutely without foundation. The war
will continue Just as long as there Is
demoralizing opposition to the Elmore
line.
Samuel Elmore was asked yesterday
whether or not the two companies had
come to an understanding. Mr. El
more said:
"No, sir; we have had no under
standing of any kind. When my line
went Into the war It knew what It was
doing. Rates had been cut, and we i burglar,
merely reduced them still fur.ther in
an effort to make matters so unprofit
able for the opposition that it would
be forced out of business or else to
restore rates. At present the steamer
Elmore Is the only vessel on the Tilla
mook run. So long as she is without
demoralizing competition, rates will
remain at the former figure 13.50 for
passengers and 5 per ton for freight
These rates are reasonable, everything
considered. If the Vosburg returns to
the run we will again reduce rates to
the figure made some days ago. There
has been no settlement, nor Is any
likely. We want the Tillamook busi
ness and expect to continue to get it."
The Vosburg was damaged slightly
In the collision with the Elmore at
Tillamook last week, and at Portland
is now undergoing repairs. It has been
said the company operating her is tir
ing of the war, but it is expected the
tug will return to the run.

Kerkeley. April SO. The burglar who
has been entering stores in the center
of Berkeley's business district 'the past
month and carrying off goods by the
wagon load, was discovered at work
last night In the rear of Needhum Bros.'
store on Shattuck avenue. Nlghtwnch
man George Thompson, Paul Needham
and A. Purcells, a drug clerk, all armed,
engaged In the chase of the burglar,
but were unable to overtake him.
Shortly before midnight last night
Paul Needham was returning from
an entertainment and happened to be
passing the store. As Needham has
been robbed several times before he was
prompted to go into his place of busi
ness and see If everything, was all
right. He no sooner go to the rear of
the store than he discovered a man at
work prying open the back window,

Brings General Cargo.
The French bark Marechal de
Koallles arrived In port late yesterday
afternoon from Hamburg. She brings
a general cargo, but did not get In last
evening in time to file her manifest at
the customs house. Captain Howes
piloted the vessel Into the harbor. The
bark has had rather a long passage
and on the way stopped at Valparaiso,
where Captln Annette ws placed ashore
for medical treatment. The bark pro
ceeded to Astoria In charge of the first
officer, and another master was sent
out from France to take charge of her
here.
the robber to get out through the front
of the store from behind. Needham left
his wife on guard while he started on
a search for Nlghtwitchman Thomp
son, Intending that she should give the
alarm If the fellow took flight.
Meanwhile A. Purcells. a clerk In
Bowman's drug store, the rear of which
opens on to Needham's back door, was
awakened by the operations of the
who kept on with his work,
not knowing that he had been dis
covered. Purcells came out with his
gun. Intent on taking a shot at the
housebreaker, hut he could not get near
enough before his presence was dis
covered by the burglar, who took to his
heels, despite the shouts to halt
Thompson and Needham then came up
and all three started In pursuit, but
soon all trace of the man they were
after had disappeared. .
The robber, who was surprised at his
work last night. Is believed to be the
same one who has succeeded In rob
bing the drygoods store of U Huff on
Shattuck avenue and the Jewflery store
of A. Gentry in West Berkeley. The
attempted burglary of Putzkex's bicycle
store last week Is also credited to him.
He was surprised at that job also and
on that occasion Nlghtwatchman
Thompson sent a bullet from his re
volver singing after him as he fled,
but his aim was faulty and the desper
ate fellow escaped.

State's Attorney Surprises Court By
Talking to pmpty fjnir,
Chicago, April 20. Cornelius Van
Zand wick's shest witij a witness today!
in Judga ChysU-aUs' court.
Vilii Zandwlck was murdered several
months ago in Harvey. He was a
porter in the saloon of George Free
man, and the latter Is on trial for the
crime. Van Zandwlck did not appear
at the saloon one day, and It Is alleged
that Freeman became enraged over
this fact, and, going to Van Zandwlck's
houxe. shot him through the heart.
Assistant State's Attorney Harbour,
in his closing argument In the trial this
morning .suddenly surprised everybody
In the court room by announcing that
he would call the dead man from his
grave to testify.
Thereupon, the ghost of Van Zand
wlck came into court. Of course, no
body saw the spook, but to all Intents
and purposes, he was there.
"This way, please," suld Mr. Bur-
hnnr. nolntlnsr h a rorenwrer at ine
spot where the Invisible spirit was sup
posed to sit.
The Jurors looked at the empty chair
as intently as If they really saw the
shade of Van Zandwlck. Freeman, the
defendant, gazed in apparent fascina
tion at the spot. The spectators grew
uneasy.
"Look at his wounds, gentlemen,"
continued the prosecutor. "See where
the bullet pierced his heart"
In dramatic manner Mr. Babour pro
ceeded " to ask the ghost questions,
pausing after each query for an an
swer. These periods of silence, during
which the apparition was supposed to
be replying, were marked by Intense,
minnressed excitement In the court
room.
At last, having finished the examina
tion of the ghost, Mr. Barbour said:
"You may go back now to the grave."
The ghost of Van Zandwlck stalked
out; while the widow and children
wept.
