"Down In Egypt" Is the peculiar title
of the opening bill of Wlldemann's big
show. There Is a portion of southern
Illinois known as Egypt, and rural dis
tricts contain some quaint characters.
The old-fashioned country fair, with
the country race horse rivalry, Is still
a fixture. Mr. Wlldemann has con-
structed a clean play. He appears as
'Squire Greyson, an Interesting char
acter. The play is a good one and
wherever played has made a hit. Prices
are 25 and 35 cents. Rale of seats opens
Saturday morning. , ' ' '
Packers report that there are not
one-third as many fish In the river
now as at this season last year. Only
about 60 per cent of the fishermen are
actively engaged In operations, and the
receipts of fish have been light. One
or two traps and a few seines are being
operated. The fish this yenr are
smaller than those caught early last
year. The prices paid are 5 and
cents, and packera any most of the
salmon are bringing the lower figure.
The season Is not starting well, but
good runs of fish are looked for later.
All of the packing houses are caring
for those Ash received.
D. H .Welch objects to the action
of the Astoria Electric Company in
hauling heavily loaded cars through
the streets. Last evening a large fuel
car of the company broke through
Commercial street at Fifteenth, which
prompted Mr. Welch to declare him
self. "The property owners object to
this sort of thing," Mr. Welch said.
'The company operates under a fran
chise which permits it to carry on a
passenger traffic, and in hauling these
heavily loaded cars through the streets
it Is violating the franchise. The city
charter limits teams to two and one
half tons, and I know of no reason why
the same limit should not be placed on
cars. I desire to register vigorous pro
test against the action of the com
pany."

When the Chlng Wo arrived at Salinas
Crux, the Mexican port of call, ehe had
nine cases of smallpox aboard. The
patients were Chinese. They were
placed ashore at Salinas Crux and the
steamship sent to quarantine, but Dr.
Earle wlii take the precaution of again
fumigating the ship. It will be pretty

The Multnomah delegation did not
play fair with the outside delegates at
the stale democratic convention, with
the result that there Is much dissatis
faction. Multnomah promised to do a
great many things, but In every In
stance failed to live up to Its promise.
Dr. H. L. Henderson, of Astoria, was
a candidate for delegate to the nation,
al conversion . Members of the Clat
sop delegation worked for him at the
convention, and from eastern Oregon
coun'ies, especially Crook and Sher
man, he received some energetic sup
port. Multnomah solemnly promised
to support him to a man, but when
the roll of counties was called It was
found but two men had voted for him.
Had none voted It would have been
regarded by the Clatsop delegates as
a matter of politics, but with only
two votes the Multnomah delegation's
action was considered a direct in.
suit. Clatsop gave her seven votes to
the Multnomah nominees. The Mult
nomah delegates spent most of their
time fighting, and but for the Port;
land row the convention would have
been harmonious. Dr. Henderson re
ceived 75 votee In the convention and
was elected an alternate to the nation.,

In July when the convention meets..

The ordinance raising the salary of
the e'ty treasurer will be brought up
for final action at the next meeting of
the council. Thebill mnkes only one

increases the salary from $55 to $75.
It requires the treasurer -to give a
bond of $25,000, to reduce the general
fund to $300 whenever there Is $1500
on hand, and to call in special fund
warrants whenever there Is $100 in
any. special fund. The measure is
fathered by Councilman Robinson.
Those who support it say the business
