PAGE EIGHT. THE MORNING ASTGIUAN, TJIUKSMV, MAliClI2U ... DEMOCRATS WOULD TRY AND HARMONIZE THI GS Think They Might Possibly Effect a Com promise With the Republicans as to Legislative Candidates. Would Be Willing to Get Out of the Way in Senatorial Years if They ft. I 4 . . were uiven an tven Break m off Years-County Com mittee Meets and Fixes April 9 as the Date for the v Democratic and Citizen Conventions, At a meeting of the citizen-demo cratic county central committee lost evening the date for both democratic and citizen conventions was fixed, April 9, the name date as haa .been selected by the repuoilcans. will see the gathering of the democratic hosts. The democratic convention will meet at 1 o'clock at the city hall, and the citizen convention, if a citizen conven tion materialises, will be called to or der an hour later at the council chambers. : . . The committee last night discussed several matters of much interest to politicians. It swnwd to be the opinion of. the committeemen that the repub licans ought to be willing to meet them half way in the matter of & com promise. "So far as we are concerned, we want to .see Charlie Fulton stay at "Washington," they said. . "First we're Astoria ns and then we're demo crats. We are willing to give the re publicans the legislative ticket com- j plete when a senator is to be elected i to the upper branch of the national house, but in off years we ought to be entitled to gome consideration,' Two years ago we elected one of our can didates, and he came nearly legislat ing our city officials out of office by offering amendments to the city char ter. The governor has vetoed the charter bill, and we want that veto sustained. Now, if the republicans rre willing to give us a fair shake, we re willing "to get out of the way at the next election. There will be two kaislative candidates this year, and we believe the matter could be so ar ranged that but two names would ap pear on the two tickets. If the re publicans are willing to meet us ha'.f way In off years we will agree to give thtm the entire legislative ticket in senatorial years. That's fair, isn't Itf The republican county committee meets next Monday night at the office of G. C Fulton. In the meantime tne citixens committee will be got together again and it is probable a sub-com mittee will be appointed to wait upon ticket the republicans and see how they prominent democrats , t, . vw the proposal. The citizen com- tee was not willing to decide the ques mltteemen say they are nnxiousi to tion. Therefore, the democratic con- come to an understanding, but that, ventlon was called to meet at 1 o'clock failing , to secure reasonable terms and, if there Is to be any cltlasen con front the republicans, they will rough vention. This statement is made by the com mitteemen to show the republicans the other crowd is formidable enough to sorted itself, dssntU the use of blood command some respect nl confer ence. Then the ever-present straight dem ocratic bugaboo manifested Itself. Every time a crowd of democratic pol Itlclans gets together the ghost of Thomas Jefferson looms up like incon sistency at a council meeting. True to Its customs, this ghost showed it self last night , There was the usual difference of opinion aa to whether or not it would be well to fly the true colors. Some were of the belief the name "citlsen" would keep West As toria on the democratic side, while others thought the straight-out demo emtio defection resulting from mask would more than offset strength which would be gained from us of the name "eltlsen." It was finally agreed that the demo crats should themselves settle this reposition. If they want to name a straight ticket, they may go ahead and nam it at their assembly, which meets at 1 o'clock on the afternoon of Saturday. It is un derstood Councilman George Morton wants to be sheriff, but none haa yet manifested an inclination to try con clusions with Couch Clinton for county clerk. H. S. Lyman will be the demo cratic nominee for school superintend ent, although he will be at St. Louis during the campaign. It Is probable the democrats will renominate County Commissioner Andrew Toung. To be exact, democratic candidates thus far are not plentiful. The county committee will be got together within a few days 'and offl cers will be chosen.
