COMPETITIVE LINE ASSURED.
Road
Canadian Pacific
Connecting
, Will Be Built.
Spokune, Wash., March 19. Spo
kane can have a new railroad, con
necting the city with the Canadian
Patlrto, within a year If she will do
nate the right of way Into the i-lty and
terminal grounds.
Suoh Is the statement of D. C Oor
bln, the well known capitalist, with
whom Hon. Cieorge Turner has been
working for more than a year past on
the project to build a mad from Spo
kane to some point In PriMali Colum
bia to" connect with the CimadlanPn-
clllc. Mr. Corbln has recently returned
from New York, and last evening gave
out the sbove statement The road. If
built, will give Spokane what she has
long needed, a competitive line, and
It Is believed will ultimately result In
giving Spokane shippers what they
have been refused by the merger
roads, tariff rates that are In accord
with the business of the city.
. Mr. Corbln says he cannot tell ex
actly how long It will take to build
the road, but he believed It would be
completed within a year. The length of
the line will be 140 to 145 miles, and It
will cost about $4,000,000. The pre
liminary surveys have been completed.
but a number of changes may be mpde
before the final location Is decided
upon.
The new road will run easterly from
Siokane to a point near Rathdrum.
Idaho. It Is likely to diverge there, but
the exact route Is not determined. It
will probably strike the Kootenai river
ot far from Bonner's ferry. The sur
ey as now made la along the Tank
river, a stream flowing Into the Koot
enai above Bonner's ferry. It follows
the Tnhk to the International boun
dary and will connect with the Can
adian Pacific at the boundary.
This is the road for which Judge
Turner drafted incorporation papers
over a year ago under the name of
the Spokane & Kootenai Railroad
Company. It is probable, however.
that a new company will be formed
and a new name selected, as the old
name hardly Indicates the 'scope of
the entirprlse. When the road Is com
pleted, through service will be given
from Spokane to St Paul unoer a
traffic arrangement with the Canadian
Pacific. 1
mlttee will go Into this phase of the
cas. It already has Its hands pretty
full. Hut the public clamor ugaiiiHt
the tnlsslonurU's Is nut doing the cause
of Mr. Smoot any good.
The committee has it Ho been appeal
ed to by other Moinion churches to
take action which shall result In Jus
tice to thorn, it seems that there are
several Mormon societies In different
parts of the country whose members
do not Mactlce polygamy and who
never did. These churches regard the
Utah organisation as apostates and
the Utah iople ah cordially hute the

simply meana that we will not have
a member of the Mormon church In
concre, evn If he Is not a violator
of any law. This Is a delicate ques
tion; it Is a dangerous precedent to
establish, and it is extreme groun.1
which I do not believe a majority of
the senate will consent to occupy."
HIGH PRICES TUMBLE.
Shingle Men Unsbls to Msintsin Fig
ures Nsmed.
Spokane. Wash.. March 1?.-The
Inland Shingle Agency Is apparently
a thing of the past. The agency was
composed of shingle manufacturer of
this city und was organised for the
purpose of cimi trolling the prices of
as the first contract lasted, which
was up to the Ix-Klmilng of the present
year, the agency was u success, but
when an effort wits made to sevure
a new contract for this year the troub
le began.
Some of the manufacturers were
in favor of a cut of 10 cents per lO'iO,
but others objected. The result Is
that the agency has fallen by the way
side and the manufacturers are mak
ing such prices as they see fit. The
Western Pine Shippers' Association
has had no trouble In getting all the
shingles needed to fill Its orders nt the
reduced price. Several attempts have
been made by the shingle men to get
together, but without avail.
Germans Forced to Retreat.
Berlin, March 19. Colonel I-ut-weln,
the governor of German South
west Africa, reports severe fighting i
there March 13. The Germans were J
forced tr retreat with the loss ofj
seven officers ni 19 men killed and
many wounded.

Another aspec t of the Smoot case Is
now attracting considerable attention
in the committee. Members say that
among the great mass of correspond
ence that pours In upon them are let
ters from constituents telling of the
labors of Mormon missionaries In their
communities. Many of these letters
report that the missionaries devote
most of their energies to winning
young women proselytes. A member
of the committee says he has abetter

women have been added to the Mor
