Reports From Over Country Shows
Deficit Over Last Year.
New York. March 11. Special tele
grams from correspondents of the in
ternational mercantile agency through
out the United States show that spring
trade, now about completed, has fallen
10 or 15 per cent behind the total vol
ume distributed in the first two months
' in 1903. The difference is not so great
at New York, but merchants find the
movement of dry goods, clthlng, shoes
and groceries about equal to that of
a year ago. but at St Louis and Louis
ville there are gains this year over
last Minneapolis and St Paul report
that the northwest is very conserva
tive, and that business is about 10 per
cent less than in March last, while at
Philadelphia the falling off in metals
and some other lines is as much as 2Q
per cent Pittsburg has felt a like de
cline, but says recent large purchases
point to the .long-waited turn in the
tide. -
Special inquiry as to winter wheat
shows that east of the Mississippi re
cent weather conditions have been fav
orable. Larger New York city con
tractors expect the total will about
equal that of last year. Philadelphia
and Chicago each report a tendency
toward a decrease In industrial wages.

Rain Was Welcome.
San Francisco, March It The dam
age done In northern California by yes
terdays terrific storm was more than
counterbalanced by the relief it
brought to the south In the shape of
bounteous rain. It rained all over the
state, and the downpour wus heavy
all the way to the Mexican border.
More than an inch and a half of rain
fell in Los Angeles and nearly an inch
In San Diego.
The storm pased rapidly in the
southeast, carrying rain and high
winds with it Heavy snow fell In the
Sierras, and the wind was exception
ally high in land as well as at sea.
Showers and sunshine alternated In
this city today and shortly before noon
there was a heavy fall of hall. No
serious floods have been reported from
the river districts.
