Yesterday E. I. Anderson, a state Harbor engineer of Washington,' went to Ilwaco for the purpose of making a re-survey, Mr. Anderson waa accom panied by W. It. White, who will have Immediate charge of the work to .be done. It appears that two surveys were made, with the reault that the correct lines have never clearly been defined. The Van Dusen Investment Company has petitioned the county court, asking that a road be laid out to John Day The court baa Instructed Clerk Clinton" to suggest to the company that It cause the necessary petition to be circulated and .signed for the desired road, as Is required in all such cases, and to thor oughly examine the proposed location and grales before reporting again to the co.irt. The street) committee of the council has the mat ter unler advisement. John Ryttlla, a, Lewis and Clark rancher, had a narrow escape from death Wedensday afternoon, while com ing down the river in a small boat As he was rowing along he heard the crack of a rifle and an Instant later was struck on the forehead by a bullet The bullet came from the rifle which had been fired by another rancher named Junna. who waa on the bank of the stream. The shooting was purely accidental and Junna was very much downcast when he learned of the Incident Rytt ala came to the city yesterday for attendance. The ball struck him on the forehead and ranged upwards, com-1 Ing out near the top of the head. The wound Is trivial. look Is much more encouraging than has1 been, anticipated. John McClellan, a Nael rancher, waa before Justice Goodman yesterday ton a charge of larceny of one dog. The animal is one of the Beanley hounds and is claimed by J. A. 0usten, a local druggist. It appears Guaten gave the dog to McClellan that the latter might train It, and the animal waa not re turned to tne alleged rightful owner when he demanded it. The hound la now somewhere on the Nasel., Justice Goodman listened to the testimony, which was rather , complicated, and took the case under advisement. He will probably render a decision today. The animal In dispute, which McClel lan holds because of the refusal of Gusten to pay him for training It, la about 2 years old and quite valuable. Chairman Nordstrom, of the council ways and meana committee, yesterday announced hla Intention of offering an amendment to the appropriations or df nance presented at the last session of the council. The ordinance carries one Item of $35 monthly for the pub lie library. This money la to be taken from the special half-mill levy recently fixed for library purposes. The levy will net $800, and the balance of the fund Is to be used for the establishment of a library In the new city hall "when erected' The special levy was made with a view to provide the public li brary with the funds necessary for its malntalnence. Mr. Nordstrom is of the opinion that the new city hall Is too remote a proposition for immediate provision, and that eyen when It is built, there will be no particular need for a library. He believes one library will be sufficient, for the present at least His amendment will provide that the entire amount to be raised by tax ation be turned , over to the public library association. ' The Astoria customs house entrance Is stacked high with Chinese goods, which were brought over on the In drasamha and, landed at Portland. A visit to the customs house at the present time would have a tendency to demonstrate to any skep tlcally 'ncllned person that the govern ment officials are sadly cramped for space, and that the memorial for hew buildings Is timely. ; ' need of praise and where all did so well it would perhaps be Invidious to par ticularize. The specialties were ex cellent, the gentleman from the Klon dike and his co-adjutor being perhapa the most amusing. On the whole the out- The story recently appearing In the Oregonlan about the depth of water on the bar and the work of the Chi nook was a boquet with a brick in It," said Captain, J. C. Campbell, chairman of the pilot board, yesterday. "The Oregonlan said the dredge had not In creased the depth, but that the state ment should not be taken as meaning that the work of the dredge was in any way being discredited. It occurs to me that the tug boat men, who keep thetr leads going every time they cross out of the bar, ought to know mora than occasional visitors a"bout condi tions at the meuth of the river. I have often wondered if It was possible to get too much water on the bar!" the cap tain exclaimed, with a knowing twtnkla In his eye. The article referred to by Captain Campbell appeared in last Sunday's Oregonlan artd caused much merriment among local shipping men, who were amused at the lame attempt of the writer to make plain the neeS for an Immediate appropriation for ex- tension of the Jetty by" discrediting the work of the Chinook, in which the) pilots have the utmost confidence. .
