"Only a Soldier Boy," the play to be
presented by Miss Clara Mathes and
her company for their opening next
Tuesday night at Fishers', Is one of
the comedy-drama hits of the season.
Were it not for the strong dramatic

be called a comedy, as It Is brimful of
bright, crisp and clean fun. Miss
Mathes, as "Cherry Blossom," the
soldier boy, Is making one of the big

Charles Belmont drew a revolver on
Jerry Slavlch, the proprietor of an As
tor street eaUng house, last night, and
threatened to commit murder. Upon
Slavich stepping back away from the
murderous looking weapon, the worth
less young hoodlum made his escape.
He waa later caught in an uptown sa
loon by Officer Undsley and Is now In
the city jail. Belmont has been in
the city for the past three weeks, dur

of bis time bumming. Soon after he j
hit town he entered the Slavlch res
taurant and after eating a meal, set
out for him by the proprietor of the
place, left while Slavich's back was
turned, and since then has failed to
make good the price. Last night be
visited the same place and ordered his
supper. Mr. Slavlch collared him.
"Pay me what you owe me," he de
manded. With an oath Belmont drew
0
a loaded revolver and pressed it
against the other man's breast. Seeing
that he meant murder, . Slavlch re
quested him to leave the place, saying
as he did ao that he would rather lose
the 35 cents than to be murdered in
trying to collect it. As soon as Bel
mont left, the restaurant man bunted
up the patrolman and told him the
story. It did not take long to find the
man with the gun, and he was at "once
jailed. Belmont is a young fellow,
and Is accounted as being generally
no good.

Four members of the Commercial
bowling team, B. J. Pye, Jack Bay,
M. P. Hardesty and P. B. Sovey,
leave tonight for Portland to contest
for the Feldenhelmer trophy. Messrs.
Laws and Peterson are already In the
metropolis. The games will be bowled
at the Portland Commercial Club alleys,
with which all of the Astoria bowlers
are more or less familiar. The local
team has done some excellent work on
the home alleys, and a general feeling j0f the Astoria Company
pervades the club that . the coveted
tiophy will come home with the team.
If the Astorlans bowl their usual game
they will unquestionably win. They
are to go against a strong combina
tion, but the scores made n Portland
are not equal to those bowled here.
The men are all determined to make
the best possible showing and an ex
citing contest Is looked for.

Wolves Deplete 'Ranges.
Butte, Mont., Jan. 29. Not a day

grass county and other sections in that
part of the .state report heavy losses
of both Cattle and sheep through the
depredations of wolves, which have be
come so bold that they no longer fear
the sight of man, and skulk along In
broad daylight within plain view of
the ranch houses. v" ,
While the stockmen have lost severe
ly from these animals during past win

from their usual haunts In search of
food, they attribute their presence this
year, which thus far has been unusual

have to be taken at once to rid then

Packs of from five to a dozen each
