At last night's session or the Cham ber of Commerce, the report of the pe dal committee, appointed at the last meeting to draw up memorial resolu tion on the death of the late C. R. Thomson, unanimously adopted. Following are the resolution: 'Where, it ha behooved an all wle Providence to take from the member of thl organisation C. R. Thomson, an esteemed member, and a cltlaen of worth, energy and affairs. "Resolved, That the members of the Astoria Chamber of Commerce, realis ing his worth as a man and as a re (peeled cltism of Astoria, do thus ex press their regret for hi death and less. "Resolved, That w express our deepest sympathy for his bereaved widow and children. ."Resolved, furthermore, That these resolution be spread upon the minutes of the Chamber of Commerce, and a copy bo sent o the family." At last night's meeting of the Cham ber of Commerce, Secretary Hlgglns read letters from Major Langfltt that were in reply to communications from the chamber regarding the proposed dredging and survy of the upper har- tor. Mr. Langfltt writes that the only dredge that Is available tor the work Is the Ladd and as soon as the vessel .jan be freed from her present duties will be operated at the point desired by the local commercial boly. ' Also that the survey of the estuary near the tongue will he accomplished In the early' spring, when the work can "be done without undue expense.." The secretary was instructed to write Major Lnnt-fltt that as early a beginning as possible would be appreciated by the chamber. A letter from the United States fish commission to Senator Fulton relative to the talked of hatchery at Warm Spring agency expressed the opinion that more data were necessary .before anything active could be done In the matter. News of an extraordinary act of piracy wa brought here by Lletutenant Com mander Anderson, of the United itate navy, who arrived here saiuraay irom the Orient on the steamer Korea. A gunboat wa captured shortly before the departure of the Korea from Shanghai by the pirates who Infest the coast of China, and the authorities whose duty It Is to fight the piratical bands have been paralyssed by the boldness of the deed. ' Not only did the pirates succeed In capturing the tiny warship and making prisoner of all It crew, but they uc ceeded in running the vessel ashore and making their escape from the gunboat that wa sent In pursuit. The gunboat, which was manned nnd officered by Chinese, was patrolling the Canton river In search of the very pirate that effected It capture. The Chinese pirates, disguised a imperial troop, bailed the gunboat and board ed it Not until every man on board was made a prisoner was their Identity re vealed. After looting the vessel and taking all the gun and ammunition on board the pirate bound the captain and executive officer hand and foot and tied their Queue together.
