"M. W, M.," writing to the Ore
gonlan, credit the late George Fran-
cla Train with having first auggeated
the salmon canning procea. The
writer quote an old-time Portland
steamboat man with reference to the
visit of Mr. Train to The Dalle In 14(1.
Mr. Train went down the river to
watch the Indiana catch salmon with
dipneta, and when he hlmaelt under
took to catch flah he fell Into the boll
Ing water and waa carried to the
rapida, from which the Indian re
cued him with much difficulty. How
ever, he waa hauled from the water
but declined to return to The Dalle
until he succeeded In catching some of
the (Uh. In all he landed 110.
It la my Intention to address the
people of The Pule tonight." cold Mr.
Train, "and I am going to decorate the
platform with theee fish."
' I argued with him that thla waa an
old atory with u."contlnued the atenm-
bont man quoted by the Oregontan cor
respondent, "that we were not Inter-
eited In snlmon that the Indians
caught millions of them, etc., but he
persisted and when he delivered his
lecture he made the auggeatlon to the
Oregon people that they- can these
salmon. He said:
Tou can talk about the god your
streams bring down from the moun
tains, but there Is more wealth going
by your door up stream every day
than you have ever dreamed of. Why
dont you can theae countleea flah? Can
them and eend them all over the world.
They will make your territory known
In every corner of the universe."
Thla auggeatlon la aald by the writer
to have been the first ever mad that
Columbia river salmon should be
packed1,'
The error thu mad by the writer
I rather a glaring one, for In that very
year, 181$, the Hume cannery waa be
ing operated at Eagle Cliff. It hod
been established In 1S6 by George W.
Hume and the late William Hume.
The first salmon parked on the Colum
bia river waa canned In 18(, two years
prior to the visit of Mr. Train to The
bailee, and the Idea originated not with
the globe trotter, but with William
Hume, who operated the first cannery
the Pacific coast at the town of
Washington, Tolo county, Cal., in 1852.
Tie first salmon canned on the Amerl
ct-.n continent was put up at a lobster
cannery on the bay of Chaleur, art arm
of the sea which divides the province
of Qubeck from hat of New Brunswick.
