held at Shively school last stfht, when

taxpayers last night that the levy be

board was adopted. "
The levy fixed last night Is S mills
less than that of last year,, when 11
mills were assessed on a total valuation

THEATERS STAY CLOSED

en tonight by the city council at a spec
ul meeMng, It is evident that Chkago
theaters will not be able to re-open
for some time. The meeting of the -mn

revision of the building ordinances, and
It was generally expected that the pro
posed amendment would be considered
und adopted, and that the proprietors
of the theaters would know what
would 4e expected of them, arid would
be able to begin alterations at once.

When the measure was called up to
night, Alderman Slaver-1 moved that
eonskloratton be, deferred that all pro
posed amendments be published, and
the whole subtil be taken up when
the council was conversaut with pro
posed ehanges. J :
The motion was iwsseil, and all con
sideration of the r.ew ordinances wss
postponed "until the council Is ready."
, They Will Go to World's Fair.
Foard A PtOkes hall was crowded to
the doors last night, the occasion being
the grand ball given by Herman Wise,
the ever popular merchant, to his mniiy
custodiers. While the chief feature of
the night was the presentation of four
tickets to the world's fair to the luiity
ones, a good time was provided for
all not a moment being spent that waa
not crowded with gaiety. Excellent
musio waa furnished by the Eagle's or
chestra and the floor was In perfect
ition for good dancing. The Judg-
es tor the drawing of the tickets were:

Hansen, Alfred Kraus, Chas. Versc-
husen, Chas. II. rroske and Leander
Lebeck. The winners, together with the
lucky nubers gollow: Arthur Peterson,

J. C. Miller. 104. t The Misses Delia,
and Messrs. Fred 'Brown and F. De-
veney contested for a prlsse at cake
walking, and the exhibition ot the two
couples waa of such an excellent na
ture thU no preference could be shown
so they wera all accorded equal hon
ors. The prises were silk umbrellas.
Mrs. J. C. Lldwell was awarded three
fine silk handkerchiefs for being the
tallest lady In the house, while J. O.
Rlchnrdson was given a fine sweater
for the same reason. Miss Delia was
shorter than any other lady m the
bouse, and was presented with a silk
muffler theref w, and Erick Johnson
was punished for his brevity with six
pairs ot woolen socks. Mr. and Mrs.
Harry Jones proved themselves to be
the best waltxers on the floor, Mrs.
Jcnes receiving a fine muffler and her
huband a pair ot silk suspenders. M.
Wise will give another drawing of tout
tickets to St. Louis and return In the
middle of July.

of smullpox. diphtheria, membraneous
croup, scarlet fever, measles, whooping
cough, or other contagious disease has
recently occurred until such houe or
building has been properly disinfected.

Rule 17 It shall be ths duty of every
physician , called to attend a person

holder, wherein such sickness Is found,

cases of smallpox, diphtheria, mem-
br.ineus croup, scarlet fever, measles,
or any other contagious disease, to the
..ounty health, officer, or other health
officer who has jurisdiction In the terri
tory. Kule 18 (in part) It shall be the
duty of the health officer, when a case
of smallpox, yellow fever, diphtheria,
membraneous croup, scarlet fever or
mesiles is reported within its Jurisdic
tion, to place, or cause to be placed,
in a consplclous place a quarantine
card upon which is printed In large
letters the name of the disease or the
word "contagious." '
Section 10 of the state board of
health la ws is as folio ws :
"Any person who shall fall to obey
or shall violate such order, shallon
conviction, be sentenced to pay a fine
of not more than $100, at the discretion
of the court."

today listened to speeches by N'ewlands
on ths Panama question, and Latimer,
advocating the adopt lyn of a plan tor
lmp.-ovement ot the public wagon roads
of ths country. Newlsnds declared
that the course of the president In Pan
ama, wss an act of war and In contrav
ention of the treaty of 184 of Inter
national Uw, and ot the constitution ot
the t'nited Htatea. Depew praised the
president's policy as patriotic, Justified
by precedent and law. Consideration
of ths postotUce Investigation resolu
tion was postponed until next Man.
Washington, Jan. 14.-The house to
day passed the lefislative executive and
Judicial appropriation bill carrying an
aggregate of nearly $30,000,000, and d
Journed until Monday. This is the sec
ond big supply measure to pass the
house. '
The house today refused to sustain
ths action of the committee as a whole
which yesterday adopted an amend
ment striking out the paragraph pro-
tiding for salartva and expenses of the
civil service commission.
