OUETO NEw ARRANGEMENT
When China Commercial Company Cut
Out San Franoiaoo For Portland
Th War Rataa War no long
ar to Ba Effective.
: San Francisco, Jan'. T. The freight
tariffs on general merchandise shipped
out of this port to th orient hav
again been advanced and are now on
the same ba.il that existed before the
late war was commenced in this city.
The rata on dour is S3 a ton and the
officials are now deliberating whether
or not to advance the rate to S a ton.
The announcement that the veaaela
C the China Commercial Company's
line will no longer call at this port Is
tha cause of the advance in rates.
The China company has allied Itself
with the Portland ft Asiatic Steamship
Company, and In future the steamers
of tha line will proceed direct from
Maniinlllo to Portland and thence to
the orient.
t 3 NEW HARBOR LINES.
Showing of Blue Prints Received Not
at All Satisfactory. : .
The blue prints received In this city
from the office of the V. 3. E. depart
ment showing the harbor lines as re-
cently readjusted have caused much
comment, and dissatisfaction exists in
consequence of the readjustment. Ac
curate measurements have not yet been
made as to the Unas provided for the
eastern portion of the harbor, but It la
Known uuu tne lines are not exienaea
nearly as far out as Is necessary to
the needs of commerce here.
From the Astoria Box Company's mill
west' the lines are Just about all that
could be desired .and both the box com
pany and the Clatsop Mill Company
will hava .to Ufficulty in loading ves
sels. The Hume min is, however, cut
off from deep water by about 200 feet.
This condition .vlll apply tothe mill
which is to be erected in the east end
by the American Lumber Company
Both concerns will be practically shut
off from water communication, and a
great hardship will be worked.
The Hume mill was built especially
for the export business, but at present
only small schooners can be loaded
there. As a result, the output of the
mill is not nearly as great as would
be. the case If deep water were ac
cessible. Under the present condition,
the annual exports of lumber from this
mill win not exceed 15,000,000, at a
reasonable estimate, whereas with deep
water the output would be easily 30,
800.000. At the next meeting of the Chamber
of Commerce the matter will be
brougt up for discussion, and It is
probable some action will be taken
looking to a petition for the relief of
the mills In the east end. .
Manzanita to Go North."
Captain Byrne, of the lighthouse
tender Manzanita, has received Instruc
tions to proceed to southeastern Alas

made at once. The Manzanita has on
board a full load of supplies for the
lighthouses of the north, but will stop
at Seattle to take on coal. On the way
up the coast she wll stop at Destruction
island to return some of the men from
that station. Her trip wll' occupy two
months' time.

Williamson has been notified of their
request Maps have been forwarded
