I hi ? f MORE WATER ON THE BAR Dredge Chinook Making Excel lent Progrca in Deepening Rjver Entrance. WILL GIVE DESIRED DEPTH Dpit Enforced Dlays Channel Hat , Already Been Materially Batter ed Other Maritina In tllig Notwithstanding that many peraous believed tha dredg Chinook would be unable to accomplish as much a tboae enthusiastic ones who worked so hard ta get her her believed, ah Is doing great work at the mouth of the river, where the bar la rapidly being deep ened. Indeed, from the teaulta thus! tar attained, there can be no question that th Chinook will give U desired depth at th rivers mouth, ana that, too. within a comparatively short time. Thus far th dredge has been unable to remain steadily at work, because of necessary repairs to her machinery and 1 the occasional severity of the weather. However, when ah has been operated great loaJs of sand were removed from the shoalest places on the bar and taken far out to sea and dumped. Last week when a large Vessel went to sea at half tide there was SS feet of water on th bar. . The opinion now prevails along th waterfront that tha Chinook will easily provide the requisite 40-feet depth at the bar, and that extension of the jetty will cinch the work done by her. Ex tension of th Jetty in accordance with the plans of the government engineers will oftord full protection to the river channel from th southwest currents that have banked up the sand at the bar, and perpetuate the work of the dredge. Many persons who watch closely th work of harbor Improve ment believed the dredge would not accomplish as much as was claimed for hor, but this sentiment is rapidly dy ing out and the Chinook is makng a host of admrers for herself. On Saturday the dredge worked for a few hours and removed S50 tons from a shoal spot on the bar. On Sunday it was the intention of the officers to operate her, but the weather was rath er stormy and the attempt was not made. Yesterday the Chinook made one trip to sea, but ceased work on account of he h-avy waves that were running . All things considered, the big vessel - is doing great work, and It is notice able that her officers and men are evincing much pride In the dredging operations. s COLUMBIA WILL BURN OIL. San Francisco-Astoria Liner to Bs Laid Up For Repair. The steamship Columbia departed Sunday morning for .San Francisco, yrtfh a full cargo of freight and a fair passenger list. She took on at Astoria a large quantity of snooks, t j liters and other freight. The Columbia will not usaln make the coast trip for some time, because of extensive alterations that are con templated. On her arrival at San Franclst'O she will be l;ild tiji for re pairs and during her stay at the ship yard she will be provldel with oil burners. The O. B. N. to., follow ing the lead of the Southern Pacific, Is now using oil quite extensively, and fuel accounts are jelng reduced mater ially In consequence. Whether or not ' oil burners will be provided for the Elder has not been announced, but it Is likely she will be laid up when the Columbia again goes Into ommisslon. While the Columbia is undergoing lepars the steamship Oregon, which has lately been plying in the toast trade, will take her place.
