cutting in for a considerable dis

brought to this city. The Kiowa sank

An average Increase of 17 Vi per cent
will be made In commodity rates bx
western railroads, taking effect Janu
ary 18.. These Increases affect almost
every shipment that is made by job
bers from the eastern and middle east
ern points to the coast.
The railroads announcing the ad
vance In this territory are the Union
Pacific, Burlington, Northern Pacific,
Great Northern and Canadian Pacific,
The eastern connecting lines have all
agreed upon the advances, and the
western lines reaching other coast
points have promulgated a new tar
Iff that shows corresponding advances
In charges
The increase In the commodity rates
Is explaned by freight traffic officials
on the ground that prevailing condl
Hons do not justify adherence to the
lower schedule. The following state
ment has been made on behalf of the
roads: - ': J;
"Wage, supplies and, in fact, every
thing, have been steadily advancing
for years. Railroad freight rates have
been the only exception to the gen
eral rule. Instead of advancing the
freight rates have steadily declined,
though apparently the consumer has
not gotten much benefit from the lib
erality of the transportation lines.
"Freight traffic officials have been
carefully Investigating conditions re
cently, and they have come to the con
elusion that It Is almost Impossible to
transport goods at the old rates. Some
of the rates that have been in effect
do not pay the expense of handling
them. As a result a careful revision
of the tariff sheets has been made for
the purpose of obtaining fairer sched
uies. . The new rates represent the
best charges . that the railroads are
justified in granting."
