Two deserters from the revenue cut
ter Perry were locked up in the city jail
last night and this afternoon were re
turned to the vessel. The men had
been missing for some daws and a re
ward was out for their capture. Two
of the officers of the Perry visited the
jail this mornins and identified the
prisoners as being the sailors wanted.

Engagements to carry lumber from
ruget sound have been accepted by the
Herman hark Alsternlxe, now at Vic
toria, and the British bark Simla,
which is at present berthed at San
Francisco. The Alsternixe arrived in
port several weeks ago from Tsingtau
after a perilous voyage. She was here
early In the year, from where she took
lumber to the Chinese port. The Simla
is commanded by Captain Steele, one
o fine most widely-known deep se.i
skippers along the coast. The bark's
last voyage was from Cardiff to th3
Bay City, with coai. C&ptan Steele
has sailed into this port at different
times for the past 25 years, but dur
Ing the last tour years paid no visits
, to the Columbia. His first appearance

the Allonbv and then commanded the
