The competition of French sailing
ships is being felt more and more by
British sailing-ship owners. The ac
counts of one British sailer have Just
been made up, and they disclose a lost
of C 1000 on the past fifteen months'
working, and that under the most fav
orable conditions. She Is fitted with
water-ballast, and secured the best
freights obtainable during the past
eighteen months, received prompt dis
patch, and was not lying up. This Is
the first year the vessel has suffered a
loss, after running ten or eleven years.
I hear that another vessel not fitted
with water-ballast, on a similar round
lasting from sixteen to eighteen months
will leave a loss of from 3000 to 4000.
It is consolatory, however, to know
that some British charters In the long
trades are discriminating In favor of
British sailing-ships, by taking them
up at from 2b. to 8s. per ton more
freight than they give to French ships,
becttuse the former are, generally
sieaking, better built than the latter,
run with fewer casualties, and their
cargoes are frequently (If not almost
invariably now) underwritten as some
what lower rates of premium. !,

Hypnotist McEwen feavs his last ex
hibition in the city last night. The
audience was not large, but the people
showed great interest In what trans
1'lred on the stage. There wa no lack
of good subjects. In a "murder" trial
Prof. McEwen did some detective work
that showed up Sherlock Holmes as a
bungling amateur. ' Blindfolded, and
aided only by the touch of Mr. Spra
uer's hand, McEwen brought to light
all the mysteries of the crime. During
the evening a young man in the audi
ence was sverely called down by the
hypnotist for having expressed .some
rather free and easy remarks concern
ing the work being done on the stage.
He essayed to reply, but failed to make
good and was in a fair war to he
laughed out of the house before Mi
Ewen got through with him.
