Patient Placed Under Hypnotio In
. fluence and Suffered Not Least
Pain While Physicians Re-,
moved Growth.
Professor P.. H. McEwen thia morn
ing placed 17-year-old Eddie Bitterley
under hypnotic Influence and kept him
there while Dr. H. L. Henderson and
Dr. Nellie Vernon removed from the
lad's jaw an abscess as large as a hen's
egg. The operation was successful in
every respect ,and particularly satis
factory to the four principals involved.
' Bitterley is a tall, strong young fel
low and says he is a logger. He has
lived on the Lewis and Clark river, but
his parsnts are dead., His home, he ad
ded, ir where he hangs his hat. For
some days past the lad had been suffer
ing excrutiatlng pain from an abcess
which formed under the left ear. The
abcess was so painful that the patient
cried out in agony this morning before
the remarkable operation when Dr.
Henderson touched it with a fine hair
brush.
The operation lasted 20 minutes, dur
ing which time the patient was under
tl'e influence of McEwen. The hypno
tist put te patient to sleep, and, after
the abcess had been removed, awoke
him. In awakening the lad McEwen
told him that he would, upon coming
out of his sleep, hear the chorus In the
opera "King Dodo," and, at the sug
gestion of the hypnotist, the lad ap
plauded the music of the chorus which
he believed to be before him. '
"During the operation I experienced
not the slightest pain," said young
Bitterley, as he sat in Dr. Henderson s
office after the operation. "I could hear
Professor McEwen talking to me, but
knew nothin'g of the work of the phy
sicians. I knew only that I was asleep
and that Professor McEwen was keep
ing me there." .
The lad added that he experienced
no pain after the abcess had been cut
open,' and McEwen stated that the
wound would heal up without pain to
the patient. Bitterley left the office
of Dr. Henderson at noon, grateful to
the hypnotist and the physicians who
had alleviated his sufferings.
While the use of hypnotism in surg
ery is not new, by any means, demon
strations of the kind given .this morn
ing are always interesting as showng
the wonderful possbllitles of legitimate
application of the strange, force which
( ne man may come 10 exen. uver an
other. McEwen said this morning that
he once kept a man under hypnotic in
fluence while doctors amputated his leg.
The most famous French surgeon per
forms all his capital operations with
the aid of hypnotic force, and one of
the leading surgeons' in the British
army likewise employed hypnosis. As
rule sick persons are good subjects,
there being some inducement for them
to receive the complete suggestion so
essential to success. McEwen seemed
to regret that the patient operated up
on this morning was not one ot tne
skeptics who are constantly deriding
him, and with whom his patience' Is
sorely tried at times.
During a conversation with the re
porters thia morning the hypnotist ex
plained the rotten-egg Incident to
which he referred from the platform a
few nights ago. The professor reiter
ated that the attack was made upon
him the night he closed hia engage
ment here five years ago. Those v.ho
hear! his statement from the platform
gatlhered the impression that the at'
tack was made perhaps by that class
referred to as the skeptics but McEwen
explained this morning that the eggs
were thrown by uubjeets who had con
stltuted part of the class, and who
were chagrined at not receiving some
remuneration for their services. One
of the eggs struck McEwen's hat, while
another struck his wife on the back.
The affiUr was not ventilated publicly
'or the reason that McEwen left the
city the following mornings
McEwen also told of the difficulties
he encounters with, subjects as well as
the general public He admitted that
the untruthful statements of "subjects
were largely responsible for the cry of
fraud which la so often set up concern!
lng - hypnosis and hypnotists, . but
thought people should withhold Judg
ment pending personal investigation in
sensitive and says he feels more keeiily,
to" the matter. He admits being very
perhaps, than others the unjust criti
cisms which, are made of his work. His
demonstration thia morning was of
such nature as to remove any doubt
that night have existed as to his mas
tery of hypnosis and he was
complimented by those
enough to have been brought In con;
tact with the case.
