The Salem Press Club to taking an active interest in the movement in fa vor of the enactment by the state leg islature of a law similar to that In force in Illinois making it obligatory upon the part of assessors to have the as sessment roll published before being equalized, and thus give every taxpayer an opportunity to examine it thorough ly. Ths plan works very successfully in Illinois, and inasmuch as only one line is required for the assessment of the property of each taxpayer, JJie bur den falls lightly upon all. ' The' passage of the law in Illinois has resulted in largely increasing the amount of tax able property on the roll, sq that jn.re ality It 'is ikn important, source of rev enue, rather than of expense. At a meeting of the directors of the Lewis and Clark fair corporation held yesterday it was decided, to opert the fair June 1, and continue until October 15, 1905, - The executive committee re ported that through the intercession of a committee consisting of W.' p. Fen ton and 'Paul Wesslnger, the 'county court had declared the fair. site exempt from taxation during the two years that it was In use by the fair, thus sav ing the corporation about 26000. On motion of Samuel Connel, a vote of thanks was tendered to the committee for Its services. The action of the ex ecutive committee In purchasing 60,000 buttons emblematic of the Lewis and Clark centennial was approved by the board. The buttons will be disposed of by the committee at a small profit. The executive committee reported that In order to expedite matters It had de cided that the corporation should con tract with the Lewis and Clark centen nial exposition commission for the con struction of the buildings.
