The big football game scheduled for
next Sunday Is arousing gr.eat interest
est In the city. For the first time As
toria has a chance to meet the big Mult
nomah team of Portland and the play
ers feel rather anxious about the re
sult. The work of the Astoria team up
to the present time has been remark
able and it remains to pit their strength
against Multnomah to demonstrate
they have one of the best teams in the
state. ,The team began last night to
practice in secret, the object being to
develop new plays, in order to spring
surprises on the public next Sunday.
The men are now in good condition and
with this week's work will be In shape
to play the game of their lives. They
arc determined to Win ;If victory Is
possible.- They realize what they are to
go up against, and Intend to give a
good account of themselves. It will be
a game none should miss the greatest
game ever played In Astoria.
Captain George (Barker appreciates
that the local team Is going to have the
hardest game of its career, but he will
go In with the expectation of winning.
"All of the visitors are first team
men," said Mr. Barker, "but It does not
follow that we cannot win. I am of
the opinion that there Is no stronger de
fense team In the northwest than ours.
At Vancouver the soldiers never once
made their yardage something I never
before heard of where two strong elev
ens contested.
"If we are unable to cope with the
Multnomahs by offensive work, we will
surely be able to hold the visitors by
adopting defensive tactics. Our men
have long been anxious to try comius'
ions with the state champions and can
be depended upon to put up the very
best quality of football of which they
are capable. The game ought to be
Interesting from start to finish."
The lineup of the two team Is as fol
lows: 1
