It has not been popular to discourse the candidacy of Pres ident Roosevelt, and this The Asto rlan well knows, but regardless of crit Iciam. there !s nothing left to do but ppenK out In meetln1. President Roose velt will be elected If he Is nominated, but there are more conservative men who are available. And In the mean time don't overlook Uncle Marcus A. Hanna. ously guarded from the fire king. It can be accomplished by legislation that wnallss the careless setter of camp or other fires in forested areas, and at the same time provide ade quate protection against the spreading of Incipient fires. The lumbermen of our sister states should be sufficiently interested .n he matter to ascertain what the law has accomplished in the state of Washington. BANNA'S PRESIDENTIAL BOOM. Although Senator Hanna has repeat edly announced that he la not a. candl-! dnte for the nomination for the presl iencjr next year, he Is being put for ward aa a candidate by . his . party friends, despite his efforts to keep out f the race Of course, no one would ' refuse such nomination If tendered and Senator Hanna will not sidestep to feet out of the way of a winning boom in bis favor. The plain truth of the matter might as well be told right now. Mr. Roose velt is greatly admired by most peo ple, and he Is well thought of in the ranks of his own party, but he has ex hibited a youthful strenuositjr that tonservatlve beads have never before witnessed coming from a president of the United States. While, fortunately, this has not apparently compromised republican principles, nor placed .the nation In an unenviable position. It has seriously Interfered with party, organi sation In many Quarters, particularly m the south, and In some western states, Tliis may appear trivial to the ; casual observer who votes and takes no further Interest in politics, but it to decidedly far-reaching and has an Important bearing. And one need not go very far Into the realms of- party organisation to find a feeling akin to that of a proprietor of a very fine China shop who has an unwelcome vis itor Inside In the nature of a mad bull. It is also noticeable that Senator Hanna has grown rapidly in public es timation. Instead of being a very bad republican with horns, he has proved a very .kind-hearted, diplomatic and honorable gentleman of splendid abil ity who Is as safe as the rock of Gib raltar. At each succeeding election in Ohio.lhe people have added fresh evi dences of - their confidence In him. Democrats as well as republicans have kind words for Senator Hanna. TheAstorian is not wise enough to say that Senator Hanna ought to be noml- Thu season of forest fires has gone and w ith it the fears of the government and timber land owners, says the Pacific Lumber Trade Journal. In contradistinction to last year, the losses for 1903 in Washington have wn nominal and In no single case has a fire been allowed to get beyond control. California ha not been so fortunate In this respect, many mil lions of feet of redwood and pine tim ber having Burnished dear fuel In that state during the summer months. Washington has a tire law" that has so far .proven effective in putting an estoppage on criminal carelessness, to which the majority of forest fires are attributable, and although the law may have to be amended net the next ses sion of the state legislature to remedy some defect that have been discovered since it has been put to the test. It has nevertheless saved the state many thousand feet of valuable Umber this year. California and Oregon can profitably take heed of the results In this state and frame legislation suit able for the purpose.
