It Is to be hoped that the quality and quantity of the coal discovered near Heppner is all that has been claimed for It. An abundant supply of this fuel obtainable at low rates will prove one of the most valuable factors Im aginable in Portland's commercial progress. The lack of coal in the past has been a handicap to Portland, but it has been in a large measure overcome, or at least offset, by the matchless natural location of the city at the head of navigation on a fresh water harbor and at the foot of a down-hill haul from the vast inland empire. Portland has forged teadlly ahead without a cheap coal supply, and if this can be added to her many advantages, even greater progress is assured. The Ore- jronlan. Astorin can not help but reap a peat benefit from tha dl3covtry back ofllepp ' ner. She will not be so near the new nlds but relatively there will be but little difference, and when railroad con nections will bavs been made Astoria ought to ha.ve chsp fuel. iarge imports, coupled with compara tively easy money markets on this side, have delayed gold shipments from Eu rops here. Towards the end ot the week there was a sharp break in ster ling exchange, so that all gold imports appeared more imminent, especially in view of the easier conditions in the for eign markets, funds being abundant at Paris. 1 . After all it seems Governor .Chamber- l.iln wants a few days time in which to make up his mind regarding the neces sities tor a special session of the legis lature. Let the state stand the loss oc casioned by the legislature. It will be a greater one o have a special session. Unless it can be shown conclusively that there is great need of this action on the part of the governor, the press generally should oppose it. TO CURE A COLD IN ONE DAY. The steamship Vermont, drawing 24 'feet, and the steamship Indrasamha, drawing 22 feet anl six inch, crossed out of the Columbia nearly an hour be fore high' water yesterday (November 3) with no apparent difficulty, says the Oregonian. These steamboats were carrying over 7000 tons each, and as there Is always a slight swell on the bar their great wt-ight required several feet more water than their actual draft. From the experience of these ships it is apparent that the bar is in better shape than it was at this time last year, and the new ocean dredge Chinook may be expected to rip out a channel of sufficient dopth to prevent any of the expensive delays lhat hampered the shipping iritering this port last winter. The dilatory movements of the govern ment have refmlted in the failure of the dredge to reach here n time to take ad vantage of the fine weather of Autumn, but there would eem to be an excellent opportunity for the htg craft to do good work whenever a twenty-four-foot ship can cross the bar in safety. The afternoon contemporaries all over the country may draw upon their re sources for imagination to prove that they are "it," but as a matter of fact, they are usually occupying the even ing field because a rival has already filled the other part of it. The evening paper has its mission to perform but in every large city on the Pacific coast the story is told by reading the papers. Returns from interior New York elec tions, in important cities, give seven cities to the republicans and five to the democrats. All signs point to New York as being the great battle ground in the presidential fight nest year and repub licans should not be resting on their Arms in that state. "Where rolls the Oregon" is a creation of Bryant, as everyone knows, but As toria just now is Interested In learning the author of "'Where the Oregon stops rolling."' He Is a modest though well known artist who resides in Astoria. His sign reads, "Swope, tfre Artist." Mr. Hitchcock is af,ter Hermann, say the dispatches. This is nothing new, Mr.Hermann destroyed copies of some private correspondence. That was enough to cause Mr. Hitchcock to "smell a rat."
