BODYGUARD FOR PRESIDENT. "Should the president have a body guard?' la a question that la propound ed and Interestingly answered by the San Francisco Bulletin. Of the ten men who have occupied the White House since the close of the civil war three have beni assassinated. And of these ten it must be remembered that only aeven were elected. Three John son, Arthur and Roosevelt became presidents by luccession after the mur der of their respective predecessors. Americans, naturally, would dislike to see their president surrounded con stantly by a guard of soldiers and de tectives, but, at the same time, they would not deny him that protection which the perils to which he is exposed require, the Bulletin points out. It would be a pity to do away with the old democratic Informality which charac terizes the goings and comings of the tenant of the White House. The pic ture of the president walking alone in Pennsylvania avenue, or traveling with only his secretary for an escort, is in veterated in the traditions of our coun try. But it really seems that the time has come when this simplicity is no longer safe. Of late a large number of'cranka' have ben arrested while attempting to enter the presence of Mr. Roosevelt. Many of them were armed. From one .of these. Peter Elliott, the secret ser vice agents took a revolver, long knife and a sclsws. He has been pronounced Insane. Two days later another "crank" this one armed with two knives, was arrested while attempting to speak with the president. A day later a man nam ed William Doherty was arrested, he having excited th suspicions of the secret service agents by his actions. In the vicinity of the White House. In view of all these fats, the prejud ice against allowing the president aj bodyguard Is out of date. For some time it has leen found necessary to sur round him with treasury agents who are, in fact, a body guard. . These treasury agents have other work to do. In the eyes of an anarchist, the pres ident is Just as much a tyrant as the czar of all the'Russlas. Radical an archists are opposed to every sort of government, and are as willing to mur der an elected ruler as they are to mur der a hereditary ruler. In Europe the arrest of murderous "cranks" are not made public, for they sulggest murder ous id;as to., other "cranks." Secre tary Loeb now announces that he in tends, so far as he can, to suppress all mention in the press of these "crank" visitations to the White House. coverles from almost the last gasp, and public sentiment, in this generation at least, will not favor such a plan. Recently the people of the United States were called upon to solemly cal culate the age of Ann. They proceeded to preform this duty and had reason to believe that the matter would end. But the trouble maker has been at It again, with this result: "Now Ann's beau is as old aa Mary was when Ann lacked six years of being aa old aa her beau now Is, and the difference between Ann's age and that of her beau is one seventh of her beau's age. How old is the talr-halred youth!" REFUSES TO PAY THE CLAIM. The city council has declined to pay a claim of 345 made by the Chlosgo Roachlne Company for furnishing the city with cockroach medicine. The company shipped half a barrel to Chief Halloek, who was anxious to subject the all to treatment, but the stun leaked out of the barrel. The odor would have killed a cockroach over In Washington, and came within an ace of annihilating the police force. It if understood the company has assigned its claim to a Portland firm, which threatens to institute suit to recover St."'. The council is prepared for war members saying, "Let 'er come; any one who'd sell that stuff to the city might to be thrown Into the bny." C A. MAY DIED YESTERDAY A Well Known Resident Passes Away After Long Illness. An eccen.ric clergyman in Manhattan has made public the peculiar view that it ought to be made permlssable for physicians to put patients to death in certain circumstances. He thinks that after thorough study of the conditions, after due authorization from the suf ferers and their kinsfolk, with careful deliberation and consultation, it should be allowable for surgeons and phy sicians to end by painless methods the lives of victims of incurable and agon izing diseases who linger with no possi ble hope of recovery. But there have been many instances of marvellous re- After two years of intermittent suffer ing Charles A. May, a well known res ident of this city, died yesterday fore noon at St. Mary's hospital between the hours of 9:30 and 10 o'clock. Mr. May was afflicted with stomach and heart trouble and towards the last of his illness there was indication of dropsy. At the beginning of 1864 "Scott'a 900" was transferred to the department of the gulf, with head quarters at New Orleans. While there the company Joined the Red River ex pedition from which time Mr. May saw active service until the close of the war. He was mustered out July 22, 1863. In ths early '70s Mr. May was em ployed on the first Holliday line run ning into Portland and while In the em ploy of the railroad company was ser iousy Injured, from the effects of which he never fully recovered. CRUSHES OUT THE LIFE s most loatllsme and repulsiye of all living thines is the seroent and tho viloct a? -.wucuHaingQi au Human diseases is Contagious Blood Poison. The serpent sinks its fangs into the flesh and almost instantly the poison passes through the enbre body. Contagious Blood Poison, beginning with a little ttlcen soon contaminates every drop of blood and spreads throughout the whole Byatem. Pamful swellings appear in the groins, a red rash and copper colored splotches break out on the body, the mouth and throat become ulcerated and the hair and eye brows fall out ; but these symptoms are mild compared to the wretchedness and suffering that come in the latter stages of the disease when it attacks the bones and more vital parts of the body. It is then that Contagious Blood Poison is seen in all its hideous iiess. The deep eating abscesses and sickening ulcers and tumors show the whole system is corrupted and poisoned, and unless relief comes soon this serpent disease tightens its coils and crushes out the life. The only antidote for the awful virus is S. S. S. It is nature's remedy, com- posed entirely of vegetable ingredients. S. S. S. destroys every vestige of the poison, purifies the blood and removes oil danger of transmitting the awful taint to others. Nothing else will do this. Stronar mineral remedies, like lnercunrnnd nnt.mh dry up the sores and drive in the disease, but do not cure permanently. Send for our home treatment book and write us if in need of medical advice or njncuil information. This will cost you nothing.
