British Tariff Will Injure Us Chamberlain's Investigator Says New Plan Will Be Detri mental to America. Chicago, Oct. 21 The Tribune today As representatives of Joseph Cham berlaln, for whom he is Investigating the result, of lh protective tariff In the Vnlted Suites, Ernest A. Hamlyn of the Honorable Artillery Company of Condon, reacr-ed Chicago last night. The results of Mr. Hamlyn's Investi gation, thus far are embodied in a preliminary rf rort which he forwarded to London from Chicago. In it he declare, the commercial greatness of this country Is due to the tariff, adding that It would be the "sal vat ion of England.' Mr. Hamlyn summarised hi report to Mr. Cham berlain a follows; "Tour protective tariff policy will, be the salvation of England. The manufacturers and tradesmen 1 have keen during six thousand mile of travel, while visiting the trade center. In this country, frankly admit that the English tariff will be a detriment to the continued Industrial prosperity of America, They admit tnt It will be best for England." The report concludes with an offer by Mr. Hamlyn to contribute $100 to fund with which to bring to America 100 English worktngmen from 50 mnnti facturing cities to study the effects of a tariff on the wages and living ex penses of the working class. Reed yesterday resumed his duties as conductor on the A. & C. rail road after a month's "vacation. Con ductor John Blew will now take his an nual lay-off, his place being tempora rily filled by M. A. THEY FIRED FROM AMBUSH. .Chicago, Oct. 21 A dispatch to the Record-Herald from Waco, Tex., says: A battle occurred last night between non-union men employed on a street car and friends of striking motormen. Henry Hays of Bridgeport, Conn., one of the non-union motormen was fatally shot. The volley was fired from am bush and was returned by the guards.
