Blast Used Dynamite On Bank Vault Bandits Attack Bank of New berg, but Fail to Get the $21,000 Kept There. Nevbur, Oct 19. Bandits before daylight this morning bombarded the building and vault of the Bank of New. Wrg with dynamite for a period of two hours. Though nine charges were ex ploded the steel vault failed to give way and the robbers abandoned th wb. In order to prevent Interruption the outlaws placed guards at the corners of the building, and as th people, awaken ed by .the explosions and the ringing of th flrebell, gathered at the scene, they were terrorised by the guards. The nrebell was rung by a young man named Austin, who heard the explos ions. The robbers escaped on horses, which they had in the outskirts of the town, going tn the direction of Portland. The vault contained probably 120.000. . MR. OBER0 S FIRST SERMON. Kev. Harold Oberg. the new pastor of ths Trinity Methodist church. East Tenth and East Grand streets, preached hU opening sermons yesterday morning and evening, says yesterday's Oregon Ian. In the morning Mr. Oberg took for his subJect,"Partnershlp With God," and preached a plain, practical and purely gosiwl sermon. There was no attempt at eff Kt or ornament, although Mr, Oberg spoke with fluency and force. At the conclusion of his sermon many In the congregation came forward and greeted the new pastor. Mr. J. B. Goltra, who has known Mr. Oberg for the past 18 years, Introduced him to members of the congregation. Every one expressed himself as pleased with the opening sermons. Mr. Oberg has filled a number of Important appoint ments in the Oregon conference, his last station being at Astoria, where he was pastor for two years, and the debt on the Methodist church there was cleared. That has been the record of the church es he has served. FINANCES OF WATER COMMISSION. The quarterly report of the Astoria water commission was submitted to the council last night. While driving a team hitched to a scraper along Exchange street yester day Jesse Crawford allowed the tongue of the scraper to strike a telephone pole. This caused a beam to come down on Mr. Crawford's right shoulder, re-rolt-ing in the shattering of the clavicle bone. He will be under the doctor's care for a few days. NATIVE DAUGHTERS ENTERTAIN. Smith has returned from Cathlamet, where he appeared In the superior court of Wahkiakum county as the representative of Ole B. Olsen, of Astoria, whose 160-acre timber claim was sold under a forged deed. Crary then transferred tht tand to the West Coast Lumber Company, a Pennsyl vania concern. It appears that Crary bought the land for $900, although the considerations tn th other transfers vete not divulged t the hearing. Wltchlta, Kan., Oct. 19,-Crysoeus broke the world's trotting mord for a mile this afternoon, going ths distance tn 1:M 3-4. beating the previous record held by Lou Dillon snd Major Delnmr by a quarter of a second.. The day was Ideal and ths track could not have been better. Cresceus went the first quarter in SO seconds flat. There wsa a cheer when he reached the half In 59 S-4, and when ths three, quarters post was passed In 1:30 the cheer became an uproar. Just before he reached ths wire Cresceus broke.and It Is believed lost fully three-quarters of a second. He caught handily and Hashed under the wire in 1:61 S-4. No wind shield waa used.
