Whlttler Will Load Fresh Water

The tank steamer Whlttler. with the
oil hulk 8uu Paula n tow. arrived
yesterday from Oleum, Cal. Steamer
and barffe have fuel oli cargoes . The
Whlttler on her return trip will take
bv far the most unique cargo ever sent
out of this port. At Portland she will
fltl her spacious tanks with fresh water
for the Oleum plant. Fresh water Is
a scarce article there and costs the
refinery about 1 cent a gallen. As the
Whlttler Is capable of carrying 10,000
barrel, her water cargo will be worth
something.
" MARINE NOTES.
The schooner Melrose cleared yester
day for Redondo, with 73.833 feet of
lumber and 150 piles. The cargo was
taken on at Vancouver, Wash.
The steamers Elmore and Vosburg
Arrived yesterday from Tillamook with
car of farm produce.
The Columbia arrived yesterday with
a large quantity of freight and a full
list of passengers.

the establishment here of a woolen mill.
Mr. Leuer wants the people of Astoria

prise. The committee made no rec
ommendation and the report was filed
