Accorling to Assessor Cornelius' re turn for the present year, Clatsop coun ty bas S7S4 acre of tillable land and 412. Ml acres of fton-ttllable. The pro portion Is aa 1 to .73, that la for every ami of tillable land there are TS acres of non-tniable. This is a little better tsbolng than last Year; Then the re turn showed 4660 aorta of tillable and 393,018 of non-tillable, or a ratio of 1 to 84. According to the assessor's enumer atlon for last year the average for each lift acres or quarter section of land was approximately S acres of tillable to 15$ acres of non-tillable land; and an en . tire section of $10 acres, would contain only I acres of tillable land. : This year's returns shows between two and three for each quarter sectioB and near ly ten acres for a whole section. The nreponileranc of non-tillable lund. It Is to be noted. Is more appnr it than real. In listing; fcinds, it has been the rule, generally to call that w hich is actually Under cultivation till able and that which Is not, though cap able of 'V eultlyatfort on- ' tillable.. Furthermore, tillable land Is valued at 14 to $20 an acre for assessment pur poses while rvon-Ullable is rated at $1 to 32 per acre, and the temptation exist for the owner. In giving in his lands, to swell the acreage cf non-tillable. It is patent to every one acquainted with Clatsop's lands that 5764 acres is only a fractional part of the area that may be made productive of small" fruits and vegetables, and as stated by Professor Siaw, that almost every kind of food Biown in temperate climates for dairy cows can be produced on the bench lands and tidelands around Astoria. According to Assessor Cornelius, If ail lands capable of cultivation was puj in the tillable list, the returns would show four or five times as much as is now riven. . According to ex-Assessor Car nahan, there -Is. tally .30,000 acres of re rlaimuble tide-lands along the Colum bia that i-ould be transformed into the finest dairying ranches in the state. State Dairy and-Food Commissioner Bailey expresses surprise that there should not be more extensive dairying j In this vicinity for he says the condi tions here are Ideal and there are mil lions In dairying in the LowerColumbia river country wh-jn the Industry is prop erly developed. ' - BAILEYS WERE PARDONED. A conimunieatlon in the Oregonlan over the signature of Charles Becker, of : Westfall, Malhuer county, shows the recent pardon of Bailey (mm thc penltentlary to have been a miscarriage of Justice. Filled with liquor.lhe Bailvy boys on horseback, rode upon William Humbert, an unarmed young rancher, and put four bullet holes through his body with M and 44 calibre revolvers murdering him within sight of his fam ily. AftJr the murder the Baileys told a ranchman in the vicinity if he In formed on them lie might expect the ame fats. A jury found the Baileys guilty -of murder In the second degree and their punishment was fixed at Im prisonment for life. .It was a surprise to the community, so Sir. Becker says that the verdict was not murder in the first degree, and ;he punishment hang ing. After thoy had served a few years of their sentence a Bakor City lawyer set out to seoure their release. A peti tion in their behalf has been on file in the executive office for years, hut it never received favorable action until Governor Chamberlain a few days ago decided to grant them freedom, after serving about aleven years. This causes Mr. Bocker, who lives in the vicinity where the crime was committ ed to remark that "Just such cases as' this makes an outraged community look to Judge Lynch for justice." The Oregonian, commenting edito rially on the pardon suggests that the state board of pardons was grossly Im post d on, by the petitioners. The gov ernor is meant as this state has no board of. pardons, and under the con stitution all pardoning power is lodged In the governor. The suggestion of Mrr Becker, that before action on an ap plication for pardon, the people of the cumminity where the crime was com mitted should be ratified by publication In the press Is a good one and that cus tom has been followed for years, if Governor Chamberlain overlooked It in the case of the Baileys, and gave th people no "opportunity to be heard, it was an executive mistake. That the soil has not been more throughly developed seems inexplica ble. That It will be brought into re quisftton soon is assured. A field for capital and labor is here presented. A gangrenous eating ulcer upon the leg is a frightful sight and as the poison burrows deeper and deeper into the tissue beneath and the ore continues to spread, one can almost see the flesh melting away and feel the strength going out with the sickening discharges. Great running sere and deep offensive ulcers often develop from a simple boil, swollen giant bruise or pimple, and area threatening danger always, because while a Bach sores are not cancerous, a great many are, and this should' make yo suspicious of all chronic, slow-healing ulcers and sores, particularly if cat cer runs in your family. Face sores are common and cause the greate sistent and unsightly and detract so much from one's personal appearance. Middle 'aged and old people and those whose blood is contaminated and tainted with the germs and poison of malaria or 6ome previous sickness, are, the chief sufferers from chronic sores and ulcers. While the blood remains in fja unhealthy, polluted condition heal ing is impossible, and the sore will continue to grow and spread in spite of washes and salves or any superficial or surface treatment, for the sore is but the outward sign of some constitu tional disorder, a bad condition of the blood and system which local remedies cannot cure. A blood purifier and tonic is what you need. Some thing to cleanse the blood, restore its lost properties, quicken the circul tion and invigorate the constitution, and S. S. S. is just such a remedy. S. S. S. reaches these old chronic sores through the blood. It goes the very root of the trouble and counteracts and removes from the blood a the impurities and poisons, and gradually builds up the entire system and strengthens the sluggish circulation, and when the blood has been purified ana tne system purgea of all morbid, unhealthy matter the healing process begins, and the ulcer or sore is soon entirely gone. S. S. S. contains no mineral or poison ous drug3 of any description, but is puar.
