Among the passengers on the steamer San Jose, from southern oorts were Carlos Mar enes and his young daughter; Marenes was a prominent merchant in the city of Granada, Nicaragua; and considered a man of wealth, but today he is an ex ile And virtually .destitute. Marenes lays his trouble at the door of Presi dent Zelaya of Klcanagua. Marenes Is of a political faith opposed to Zelaya and the merchant declares that be In curred the personal animosity of the ruler. A short time ago Marenes says Felaya vailed upon him or a loan of $0,000. The loan In this case meant confiscation, it being customary not to repay and to punish those who have the" hardihood to aak for a return of such moneys. Marenew was then ad vised by nls friends to flee from the country as bis life was endangered and he accordingly sought safety on the San Jose.
