village, sh.uli.meil, stopped In Oyster
Bay, searched and later placed on a i

and appeared to be a harmless crank.
possibly a rellgloue. fanatic. He told
the officers he wan a Swede and had

suinm.r hflme in the newspapers. A
short time previously the president, ac
companied by hi wife, had gone from
the house to the woods near by to chop
wood, that b'Jng a favorite exercise of
the preslient.
After the man was turned by the of
llcer he looked curiously about the
grounds and then started on his re
turn to Oyster Buy, where he was tak

officers and examined. The officers
were convinced he was entirely harm-

that he leave the village.

New York. Sept. it. BookerT. Wash

icised by the local Presbytry in its
weekly meeting, says a dispatch from
Philadelphia. The question was
brought up through the report of the
Freedman'a committee of which the
Rev. J. Calvin Meade Is chairman.
The report gave credit to Washing
ton's influence for the Increase of Inter
est In the board. It deplored "the an-
Imnl trait In the negro, which la so
promtnent."and continued: "Ylt it Is
to be questioned whether we should not
balance the brutal assault on woman
hood with the subtle power of seduc
tion which the white man of social
standing is an adept.'
It urges the churches to "rise above,
prejudice and devote all energies to
ward dealing with the negro problem.
and deplored any mob violence.
Immediately after the reading, Dr.
J. A. Warden, superintendent ot Sab

New York, Sept 22. A case of mur
der1 by the Injection of poison by means
of a hypodermic syringe Is reported,
aaya a London dlspatchvto the Herald,
by the Moscow correspondent of the
Daily Mall, who write that an unpleas
ant smell proceed tag from a wiener
basket which arrived aa luggage at the
Brest railway station In Moscow, and
for which no claimant appeared, caus
ed an examination to be made, when
the body of a well dressed man waa
found.
An examination showed that death
had resulted' through the Injection of
poison under the skin by means of a
syringe. Inquiries were instituted
which proved that the murdered man
waa a well-to-do land owner named
Martin Tomasheeky. The perpetrators
of the crime have been discovered.
The 'chain ot evidence la so complete
that they have admitted their guilt.
The circumstances under which the
deed was committed are of a highly sen
satlonal character.
Tomasheeky had no occupation and
resided at a hotel. He was passion
ately fond of card playing and visited
a club every night, where he played for
heavy stakes and was as a rule very
fortunate. On the day of the murder
his cousin called at th hotel and ask
ed him to come to his mother's heuae
to play cards with two other friends of
the family. Then at a given signal he
was seised, his mouth covered so that
be could not cry for assistance and the
poison waa lnjjcted under the skin of
the forehead. - The three men then
watched the effects ot the poison for
about half an hour, at the same time
taking his money from his pockets,
which they divided among themselves.
After their victim died they placed
the body In a basket and one of the
men tied a piece of cord tightly around
the throat to irake sure, as he says.
that there could be no further trouble
with the murdered man.
The perpHrators of the crime were
confident that their social positions
would prevent any suspicion falling on
them. It was only after, the strong
chain of evidence had been completed
that they confessed.
