August U-With the last day of the month the summer of 190S in New York passes into history as tne ,if recorded bv the weather Bu reau. June reached the record of 1SSL July was lust a little bit off normal, but not enough to keep the fellow months of the summer from taking the average temperature a fraction below the fig ure reached in IS97. The average temperature during June July and August, figuring the last day of the present month at the normal, was 69 degrees. In 18997 the average temperature was recorded- at three quarters of a degree higher. The av erage temperature during August has been 69-5 degrees, nearly two degrees lower than, the lowest mark the month ever reached. In 1S9I and eight times previous to that year, the average temperature for August was recorded as 71 degrees. Mariners of the old fashioned school have looked askance at the peculiar conduct of the elements during the last 30 days before but the inhabitants of tenements have enjoyed the unseasonable . coolness which ! brought woe o numerous summer ho tel keeiers. , . Mr. W.O, Wilkinson and Miss Fran ces Thomns went to Portland last night to remain for a few days. W.E.Schimpff, manager of the North Pacific Brewery was called to Port land yesterday on business. C. W. Loughery went up the river on last night's train to be on his preserve at the opening of the duck season. A.J. Henderson ha severed his con' nection with C. H. Cooper and accept ed position with the A. Dunbar Co, Rev. John Warren left yesterday for his home at Heppner. He has been the guest of Vice-Consul and Mrs.' Cherry tor the past few days. Dr. G. W. Tape and wife, of Hot Lake, Union county, were in the city yesterday. The doctor was one of the prime movers In bringing the resort to the front. A. A. Kendrick, who has been con' nected with the Arm of Peterson Brown for several months, leaves this morning for Portland, to accept a posi Hon with a shoe house. Mrs Wm. J. Owens and sons Alex and Wallace of Seattle, who have been visiting their parents Mr. and Mrs. H StwlmJer for the last six weeks re turned home Sunday. Colonel Bringle, of New York, a well known Savation Army evangelist is visiting the local branch of the organ tuition here. He is assisted by Ensign Mabee a soloist Theo. Davis, who has been stage manager at the Unique theater for some months, has accepted a position with Manager Selig. He severs his con' nection with the Unique Saturday night. . " Messrs. C. A. May and Thos. Dealey have returned from San Francisco where the attended the Q. A. R. en campment. Both gentlemen are quite enthusiastic In their praises of the un bounded hospitality extended them by he Californlans and retain many pleas ant memories.
