Lieutenant Cooper has been trans ferred from Fort Stevens to Fort Co ' lumbfa taking the place of Lieutenant Casey who has gone east to attend school. H. W. Z. Peterson, former acting manager of the local Western Union office, is In the city. Mr. Peterson has been at Long Beach and will go to Port land in a few days. Walter Ridehalgh will leave by the steamer Elmore this morning for Gard lner, where he goes to start up the can nery of the Umpqua Packing company. Mr. Ridehalgh will return the first of next week. C. E. Sands of Great Bend, Penn., is visiting his friend, F. L. Greenough. who represents the O. R. & N. at this place. Both were printers back in Troy Penn., and their meeting after years of separation is a most agreeable one. Oswald West will leave for Salem ihis evening A'here he wll enter upon hie duties as state land agent at once. His position at the First National Bank will be filled by Burr Osburn, who In turn will be succeeded by his brother, Austin Osburn. t - Marine Notes. On IU last trip in from Tillamook the Elmore brought In one ton of wool for San Francisco, 101 cases of cheese, nine cases of eggs and 21 tierces of ralmon. The schooner Francis H. Leggett.STS tons, arrived In yesterday with a small quantity of merchandise for local anl Tortland merchants. On its return trip to the By City the coaster will carry lumber and will tow a raft from Stella. The Leggett belongs to A. B. Hammond and this is her first trip to this port. The steamer Alliance left out yester day for San Francisco and way points. Her cargo consists of 50,000 laths for San Francisco, J65 tons of merchandise for Coos bay, 261 tons' of merchandise for Eureka and M packages from As toria for Coos bay.
