Takes His Life
Message From Ajer, Cal., Con
veys Shocking News Brother
Goes to Scene
Duncan Stuart 1 dead by hi own
hand, word to that effect reactrmg the
city last evejilng from Ager, Cat., The
brief message conveying the shocking
intelligence stated nothing beyond the
bare fact that the unfortunate man
had committed suicide, nothing being
lug off. Mr. Stuart had been ab
sent from the city for about 10 day and
to the public bis exact wheareabouts
have not been clear, though It was gen
erally known that he dad gone to Cal
ifornia. The news of his death proved
a great shock to his frlendls. Mrs.
Stuart who I In the city, is prostrated
with grief. D. M. Stuart, brother of
Duncan, will leave this morning for
Ager and the body will be brought to
Astoria for InUrment.
Up to the time of his departure from
this city Mr, Stuart has been In the em
traffic de ploy
of Samuel Elmore, representing
th traffic department. 'Previous to
his taking a iiosltlon with Mr. Elmore
he served as accountant In the Astoria
National Bank, and when Case' bank
was Jolng business held a position In
that institution. He was deputy sher
iff under Jack Williams when that pop
ular official was so foully murdered by
the Seaside bandit. There was talk
nt that time of appointing him to the
vacancy and he retired from the office
when Thomas Llnville was made sheriff
A number of years ago be was married
tn Miss flattie Ralston of this city.
Duncan Stuart wa strictly honorable
in all his business dealings and his em
ployers speak In the highest terms of
the proficiency, of his work. He was ap
preciated and liked by all who knew
him. It is supi&eed that he ended his
J! re during a moment of great despond
ency. He was between 35 and 40 years
of age and Is a native of Pipestone, Wis
He was mmber it the Woodmen of

and Is now In the hands of private In
dividual. Development should be al
lowed to proceed In these districts unlm
pali-ed. The timber should be market
ed and such of the lands as are fit
should be cleared and be devoted to
Agriculture, etc. What good can come
from enclosing all the Intervening lauds
In a Forest Reserve Is not apparent.
They should be allowed to be taken
up and thus asulst in the development
of the lands now owned.'" -
IRRIGATION
"TheOregon delegation expects to urge
It upon the Geological Survey that Ir
rigation works be begun at once In Ore
gon under .he national Irrigation law.
This Is a matter of greatest concern
to this state. Oregon has three mil
lion acres of available irrigable arid
land. Under the law Oregon has con
tributed more money to the fund than
any oth ;r state In the union. In round
numbers three million dollars during
the past two years. Under the law It
la practically optional with he Geolog
ical survey where his money Is spent.
There Is no reason why Oregon,' having
especially during the first 10 years,
contributed the greatest proportional
amount, should not be among the states
receiving the first benefits and we ex
pect to Insist upon such action by ev
ery means In our power."
SENATOR MITCHELL SPEAKS
Senator Mitchell In an interview with
Fred .Wi Mellls, the mining man of
Baker City, said In, Portland a few
days ago that he would use his beet en
deavors to Induct the government to
leave out of the forest reserves the best
part of the mineral lands Included.
Senator Mitchell elao stated that he
understood, that without a single ex
ception, every mining man affected by
the reserves, was bitterly opposed to
covering mineral land with such re
strictions, and he did not think that
the government would act arbitrarily
In view of his strenuous opposition

Voyage in pish Boats is Attract

Chances Against Them
, - . . i. !. .
The local Oreeks are Interested In
the outcome of the trip recently under
taken by two of their countrymen, Nick
George and Nick Geurgus, who are sup
posed to be somewhere on the Pacific
at the present time en route for San
Francisco in fish boats. A distance of
over 700 mile In an open boat on an
open sea I a perilous undertaking un
der any condltlons.but when clrcumstan
ces of the present case are taken
Into consideration the Increased danger
is at once apparent. About IS year ago
a company of fishermen sucesefully
made the trip to the Bay City, but then
each boat contained more than one
man. This gave an opportunity for the
crew to run shifts, thereby allowing the
men to obtain necessary rest. On the
arrival of the boat at San Francic
co, the men were made much of. They
old their cooking utensils and other
small articles used on the trip at a
good figure. .
George and Geurgus are courting
every posrble danger and if the men
reach San Francisco safely they will
be the sensation of the hour. They
are young and strong and are known
to be reckless. It Is said that they
started off on their long voyage in a
buff because the steamer did not find
It convenient bo ship their boats.

SUPERVISOR OF DISTRICT NO. 6 INSTRUC
TED TO PUT FORCE OF MEN AT WORK
ON UNDERBRUSH
Following out the Instructions
given him at the last session of the
county ommlssloners, Roadmaster
Frye haa detailed Andrew Johnson
road supervisor of district No. 6, to
employ a force of men on the old falls
road for the purpose of clearing away
the underbrush and In other ways to
make the highway passable. The work
will begin next week. Aside from
clearing away oil obstacles to traffic- a
more suitable grade will be established
than the one now In use. The objec
tions the present grade Is that It is In
places entirely too steep for any prac
tical use and the entire route will be
gonaovar for the purpose of making a
more gradual slope instead of having,
as at present, abrupt Inclines at Inter
vals. The road will simply be made
wide enough to , admit of ordinary
traffic. The distance between Youngs
river falls and Olney ii a little less than
two miles, so It will be some time be
fore the proposed Improvements are
fully effected. . ;
