EINGER Hermann has promised the
First District people to work for an ap
propriation for Taquina Bay harbor.
"It will be hard to secure." he says,
"but I intend to agitate the matter
continually." And he must agitate
strenuously and effectively, if he would
show his good works before the next
republican convention of his district.
PROF. A. A. Cleveland again appears
In print :n the quarterly issue of the
State Historical Society with an instruc

the city In this particular line.
IT is now time to purchase material
for decorations. Regatta headquarters
are full of flags and bunting, and many
a good idea can be obtained In the mat

The Morning Astorian has been sold
to Walter Lyon, formerly private sec
retary to Governor Geer, and Otis a.
Patterson, formerly edltof of the Hep-
pner Gazette and recently register of
the land office at The Dalles. Both gen
tlemen are competlent and thorough
newspaper men and will no doubt out
the Astorian on a paying basis. The
Herald welcomes the two gentlemen to
Astoria and believe that there will be
a better understanding and more
hearty cooperation under the new man
agement with the press of the city than
heretofore. The Astorian has In th
past pursued a reckless policy and has
antagonized the best business element
of the city. It has been the most un
popular paper ever published here and
the change In the management will be
welcomed by everyone who will 'gladly
support a morning daily run in the In
terests of the business men and people
and not a person it organ for a cannery
or a church. Mr. Elmore, former own
er, is a gentleman, and had he been a
practical newspaper man and In a po
sition where he could control all- de
partments of the.Vstorian It would have
been different, but there were too many
strings attached to the office, all of
which were antagonistic to the best In
terests of Astoria and Clatsop county.

In Piano Buying at Eilers
Exhibition Sale.
One of the most costly pianos now
owned In Astoria is a most exquisite
masterpiece of the famous Vose factory
of IVtMon. which was selected by Miss
Maude Stockton Kllers Piano house
ftnd delivered at ;he family home on
Exchange street yesterday.
It Is a beautiful Orchestral grand six?
'n elegantly hand carved c:ise of F.n

' ANOTHER WORK OF ART.
Mr. Charles Versohuoren stepped Into
the Eilers Exhibition Sale and secured
tho elegant Hadqrf cample pluno that
has won so mu.tt praise and admiration
from all who have seen and heard It.
This Is one of the fine new makes that
will undoubtedly win most enthusiastic
recognition In highest musical circles
vy where on account of Its sterling
musical qualities, and uniqueness of
case design and construction.
The first piano of this make in Astor-
Ma was secured several months ago by
Mr. Otto Hellborn, our most capable
orchestra leader. In referring to her
piano In a recent letter to the houseMrs
Hellborn says:
"The Hadorf piano I purchased from
you gives me entire satisfaction. Its
tone is remarkable for purity, power
an! swetness."
(Signed) Mrs. Otto Hellborn.
A COLL FOR MISS JONES.
Late In the evening a superb drones
tral grand upright JacobDoll piano was
secured by Miss M. L. Jones, of Duane
street. The Doll is one of New York's
leading pianos, and may be found in
hundreds of the finest homes In Port
land, where it Is highly esteemed for
its great durability as well as for Its
sweetness of tone and the eveness of
its scale.
It was late in the evening when Miss
Jones made her decision, but she waq of
course anxious to have the piano for
over Sunday, and accordingly the in
strument was finally strapped on the de
livery truck and rolled up the sidewalk
to the residence.
""We don't like to deliver our pianos
after dark," said Mr. Smith, the gen
ial manager, in mentioning this occur

would-be competitors the opportunity
